High Museum staff celebrates with millionth 'Louvre Atlanta' visitor.

The High Museum of Art announced on Jan. 30 that it welcomed its 1-millionth visitor to “Louvre Atlanta” since the series of exhibitions opened on Oct. 14, 2006.

The High is currently presenting the final phase of the exhibition titled “The Louvre and the Masterpiece,” featuring 91 works of art drawn from all eight of the Musée du Louvre’s collection areas.

This phase explores how the definition of a “masterpiece” as well as taste and connoisseurship has changed over time.

“Louvre Atlanta” has brought hundreds of works of art from Paris to Atlanta in an unprecedented three-year partnership that has explored the range, depth and historic development of the Louvre’s collections.

During the first year, “Louvre Atlanta’s” first phase featured the exhibitions “Kings as Collectors” and “Faces of History and Myth: Busts from the Musée du Louvre.” For its second year, exhibitions included “The Louvre and the Ancient World,” “The Eye of Josephine” and “Houdon at the Louvre: Masterworks from the Enlightenment.”

Private and corporate support for the project has been provided by Anne Cox Chambers, a member of the High’s board of directors. Accenture; United Parcel Service Inc.; Turner Broadcasting Corp.; Coca-Cola Co.; Delta Air Lines Inc. and Axa Art Insurance.

Foundation support for the project has been provided by the Sara Giles Moore Foundation; the Forward Arts Foundation and the Frances B. Bunzi and Tull Charitable Foundation. It also has been supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and Humanities.

The Rich Foundation serves as planning partner for the partnership and the project also is supported by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The High identified the 1-millionth visitor as Debbie Dobson from Roswell, who was visiting with her daughter, for which she received the six exhibition catalogues, tickets to the Alliance Theatre, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and a High Museum of Art Family Membership.
