Israel and the Middle East, though often receiving negative publicity in the media, offer opportunities for Georgia manufacturers because the region is generally in a growth phase, according to Sherwin Pomerantz, head of the Georgia office in Jerusalem.

He told GlobalAtlanta in a video interview that while Israel is his region’s prime source for investors into Georgia, Turkey’s population of 70 million is a large market for consumer, defense, health and disposable medical products.

Jordan is a relatively small market but serves as a vacation spot in the region during the hot summer months and has become a respite for Iraqi businesspeople dislocated by war over the past few years. He estimates that some 600,000 Iraqis are now living in Jordan.

While Dubai, one of the United Arab Emirates, is seeing its booming construction industry slowing, opportunities still exist for Georgia companies in the security, chemicals and gourmet processed foods sectors, Mr. Pomerantz said.

His consulting firm represents Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania in the Middle East from its offices in Jerusalem, Amman, Jordan; and Istanbul.
