Greece Added to U.S. Visa Waiver Program
David Beasley
Atlanta - 03.09.10

Greek citizens will soon be able to visit the United States for up to 90 days without obtaining a visa, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced Tuesday.

Greece joins 35 other nations that are part of the U.S. Visa Waiver Program.

In order to qualify, nations must meet strict security standards such as sharing information and data with the U.S. and promptly reporting lost and stolen passports.

“I commend our partners in Greece for committing to strong screening and security standards and enhanced information sharing for travel by Greek citizens to the United States as we work together to protect our citizens and strengthen our economies,” Ms. Napolitano said in a news release.

The visa waivers for Greek citizens will become effective in about 30 days, the news release said.

U.S. citizens were already allowed to travel to Greece for up to 90 days without a visa, according to the U.S. State Department.
