Jaipur Living Inc., the India-based rug company, is moving its American headquarters from Norcross to new facility off Interstate 75 in Cherokee County as it continues growth centered on an expanding catalog of home goods.

Jaipur announced in February that it has bought 23 acres to build a 180,000-square-foot distribution center that can be expanded to 300,000 feet in a second phase. The total investment in both phases would be $22.3 million.

Formerly known as Jaipur Rugs, the company is known for its distributed manufacturing model, where weavers in villages make rugs by hand at their homes for export to global markets Global Atlanta visited executives and a village-based weaving operations in Jaipur, India, in 2012 for a profile of the company in its India Special Report.

Jaipur’s new facility will immediately double the size of its Norcross operation. The company, which also has had a showroom at the Americasmart, has long sourced more than rugs, and its name change illustrates its new focus on throws, pillows and many other products.

“Our company has grown tremendously over the last few years. Our new facility in Cherokee County will allow us to better serve our customers worldwide and sustain that growth. We are excited to be a part of Cherokee County and appreciate all the efforts of the Cherokee Office of Economic Development in making this a reality,” company President Asha Chaudhary said in a statement.

The company will be just down I-75 from another fast-growing Indian home goods firm, Surya, which broke ground in 2014 on a $33.5 million facility in Cartersville.

Chairman N.K. Chaudhary, who built the firm from two looms to a global operation, is slated to visit Atlanta April 2 for the American India Foundation’s fundraising gala.
