Louis de Corail

Arriving to his latest posting in Atlanta in August, Louis de Corail barely had time to get his feet under him before he was thrown into the whirlwind of activity promoting his country here.

And after leading the consulate’s hosting of the annual France-Atlanta series of business, educational and cultural events in October, which included the Crystal Peach Awards honoring companies doing cross-border business, Atlanta’s new French consul general has a full slate for November as well.

On Nov. 18, the French-American Chamber of Commerce is set to host the 30th annual Beaujolais Nouveau festival at the InterContinental Buckhead Hotel, a fundraiser that often draws attendance from France’s top diplomat.

A few days before that, though, he’ll have a chance to reflect on his agenda during a public interview as part of Global Atlanta’s series of Consular Conversations luncheons. To date, Global Atlanta’s editors have interviewed diplomats representing the United Kingdom, Ireland, Mexico and India.

Topics of discussion at this month’s event will include French investment in the South, how terrorism affects tourism, outcomes of France-Atlanta, France’s upcoming elections, the rise of European nationalism, fighting extremism in Europe and beyond, views on the results of the U.S. elections and France-U.S. ties, and more.

If Mr. de Corail’s biography is any indication, the discussion should be wide-ranging and insightful.

The accomplished diplomat has worked in various postings around the world on a range of items within France’s foreign-affairs agenda. He started with the foreign ministry after a two-year stint in Liberia. He later worked at French embassies in Fiji, Croatia, Ireland and Norway, serving as a press officer in Canada amid that string of appointments. He’s also worked in the European Cooperation office in Paris.

Most recently, he drew on his earlier protocol experience during a four-year temporary assignment as director of international relations for the city of Bordeaux, famous for its wines.

Mr. de Corail holds a master’s degree in literature.
