The Trump Effect: The Future of Georgia’s Economic Ties with China and Mexico

April 20, 2017 at 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

If two countries were vilified during last year’s campaign season, they were China and Mexico. While both have wooed many American factories since the early 1990s, they’re also two of the state’s top three export destinations, buying more than $6 billion in Georgia-made goods in 2016. And with a $500 million tire plant in the works, China is also on the cusp of becoming a major source of foreign manufacturing investment in the state.

Newly inaugurated President Donald Trump has made clear his intentions to reorient the U.S. trading relationships with both economies, but will his zero-sum rhetoric translate into new policies? How might changes to NAFTA or a blanket tariff on imported goods impact the state’s outreach to these vital partners?
