Teacher’s Workshop: Teaching Africa

As part of the Annual Meeting of the African Studies Association (ASA) Conference held in Atlanta this year, K-14 educators are invited to participate in an all-day Teacher’s Workshop focused on teaching Africa.
Sessions include:
• Presentation on Resources for Teachers; Facilitators: African Studies Council Representatives
• How to Re-write African History and Include African Women’s Achievements; Facilitator: Agnes Ngoma Leslie, Ph.D.
• How to Teach Francophone Africa; Facilitator: Lucie Viakinnou-Brinson, Ph.D.
• How to Teach the African Diaspora through Hip Hop; Facilitator: Scott Heath, Ph.D.
• How to Integrate Africa, the Arts and STEM: a multisensory learning activity that includes making a personalized lamellophone (mbira) with parts crafted in the Spelman Innovation Lab and learning about African-centered innovation through a variety of fields; Facilitators: Quintina Carter-Enyi; Aaron Carter, Ph.D.; and Spelman College students
• How to Effectively Teach Africa in the Age of Trump: A Corrective Strategy; Facilitator: John Metzler, Ph.D.
• How to Develop Innovative Learning Communities for Social Justice and Student Success; Facilitator: Tiffany Green-Abdullah, M.Ed., PMP
• How to Infuse Culture into the Curriculum (language, practices and traditions); Facilitator: Lisa R. Shannon, Ph.D.
• How to Confront the History and Legacy of Apartheid in South Africa in the US Classroom; Facilitator: Breeanna Elliott, M.Ed.
• How to play the kalimba; Facilitators: Spelman College students
During the 2018 Teacher’s Workshop, educators will have the opportunity to enjoy Auburn Avenue Research Library’s exhibition “The City Too Busy to Hate: The 50th Commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Assassination,” among others.
The cost to participate is $25.
