Vin Martin, former honorary consul of Jamaica based in Atlanta

A funeral service for Vin Martin, the former honorary consul of Jamaica to Atlanta from 1997-2013, is to be held at the Springfield Baptist Church in Conyers at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug.1.

Mr. Martin died on July 23, one week shy of his 71st birthday, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta after a long illness.

An attorney, he also served as chairman of the Atlanta-Montego Bay Sister City Committee as well as chairman of the Atlanta Sister City Health Mission to Montego Bay.

He forged a strong bond between Atlanta and Montego Bay specifically and Jamaica more generally by helping to organize medical missions, collaborations of city services and trade delegations.

Under his leadership, the health mission served thousands of underserved individuals in Montego Bay and contributed goods and services valued at thousands of U.S. dollars.

Jamaica’s ambassador to the U. S., Stephen Vasciannie and Jamaica’s consul general to Miami, Franz Hall, have paid tribute to Mr. Martin, hailing him as a source of guidance and inspiration to many Jamaicans in the diaspora, particularly those living in Atlanta.

The body will be interned on Aug. 2 after a private ceremony.  Mr. Martin is survived by his wife Hazel, and sons Corey and Kieron.
