For many professionals, a successful career can be traced back to a nurturing mentor or former school teacher. Thanks to a new award program and charity fund from the British education-tech giant Promethean World Plc., some of those influential teachers can be properly recognized while giving even more back to the community.

The U.K.-based company, which has a regional office in Atlanta, has opened nominations for its inaugural 2015 Cann Awards which honor five teachers from around the world who have made a notable impact on their students’ lives. The winners will have the privilege of selecting a charity or non-profit organization to which the company will donate $2,500.

Students may enter their favorite teachers through written essays or a multimedia project. However, only teachers from Australia, Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Mexico, the U.K. or the U.S. may nominate or run.

Once entered, applicants will be reviewed by a panel of judges looking for strong leadership in the classroom and positive results among their students. The five most outstanding educators along with their nominating students will attend an award ceremony on Jan. 10 in Atlanta.

“Teachers inspire us to be our best – to strive to achieve more than we think we are capable of,” said Jim Marshall, CEO of Promethean. “If a teacher touched your life, made you feel important, or helped you become the person you are today, The Cann Awards is an opportunity to say ‘thank you’ and to share the teacher’s story with the world.”

The Cann Awards are a tribute to Tony Cann who founded Promethean World in 1997. The company is headquartered in Lancashire and has regional offices across the globe, including Atlanta.
