Korean battery giant SK On’s Georgia subsidiary is bringing an information technology hub to Roswell, creating 200 new jobs to add to the thousands of production positions created by its Commerce battery plant.

Announced in 2019, the Commerce plant set off of a wave of billions of dollars of investment in the electric-vehicle ecosystem from Korea-based companies, including a $4 billion joint-venture factory in Cartersville it plans to build with Hyundai Motor.

Its initial announcement was closely followed by a small IT outpost by SK holdings C&C in Gwinnett, a $1.8 million investment that created 15 jobs.

The new SK Battery America IT hub in Fulton County will be significantly larger, representing a $19 million investment that will support the world’s fifth largest EV battery maker as it builds out a network of plants in the United States. SK On is building batteries for the Ford F-150 Lighting and the Volkswagen ID.4 in Georgia. It’s soon to launch production at a second Georgia plant adjacent to the first, and it’s partnering with Ford on a pair of joint-venture plants in Kentucky and Tennessee under the BlueOvalSK moniker that are bringing a combined $11.4 billion investment and 11,000 jobs.

Georgia Department of Economic Development Commissioner Pat Wilson said the IT center is yet another example of the “ripple effects” that come from transformative investments like SK Battery’s.

“Suppliers, support centers, and expansions create new opportunities that go beyond the company’s original scope, location, and even industry,” Mr. Wilson said in a statement.

The center will be located at Roswell’s 1110 Sanctuary Parkway, and operations are set to begin this month.

SK is hiring “IT experts for battery manufacturing execution system development and operations as well as data analysts.”
