Ethiopian Airlines is inviting Atlanta-based travelers to embark on a journey that combines adventure and culture: participating in one of the world’s most famous running races, the 2024 Great Ethiopian Run, on November 17 in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.
As a key sponsor of the race, Ethiopian Airlines makes it easier for Atlantans—whether running enthusiasts, business leaders or leisure travelers—to experience this exciting cultural event through its direct flights from Atlanta to Addis Ababa, which began in 2023.
Dubbed Ethiopia’s biggest street party, the Great Ethiopian Run is a 10-kilometer race founded by legendary long-distance runner Haile Gebrselassie in 2001. The event attracts more than 45,000 participants each year, ranging from professional athletes to international visitors looking to take part in the fun-filled atmosphere.
For Atlantans, this race offers a unique opportunity to combine athletic adventure with cultural immersion, says Muluken Amare, Ethiopian Airlines’ Traffic and Sales Manager for the Southeast USA, based in Atlanta.
“The Great Ethiopian Run is not just about athletics; it’s about connecting cultures,” Mr. Amare asserts. “Ethiopian Airlines is proud to facilitate this connection by offering direct flights from Atlanta to Addis Ababa. We encourage both business and leisure travelers to experience this iconic event and discover the beauty of Ethiopia.”
The race route winds through the streets of Addis Ababa, where local participants celebrate with dancing, singing and festivities led by Ethiopia’s world-renowned athletes, bringing together people from across the globe.
In addition to being a festive occasion, the race also supports local charities, encouraging participants to contribute to various Ethiopian philanthropic organizations.
Ethiopian Airlines and local organizers can help travelers plan customized itineraries to participate in the race as well as explore Ethiopia’s historical and cultural sites, such as the ancient churches of Lalibela and the Simien Mountains.
Ethiopian Airlines Leads in African Travel
While the Great Ethiopian Run takes center stage in November, Ethiopian Airlines is also celebrating the arrival of the latest addition to its fleet—Africa’s first Airbus A350-1000.
The state-of-the-art aircraft accommodates between 350 and 410 passengers and offers spacious business-class seating, high-speed Wi-Fi and 4K entertainment screens. Economy class passengers also enjoy enhanced in-flight features designed for comfort during long-haul journeys.
“The A350-1000 provides an enjoyable travel experience with unrivaled comfort and the latest in-flight technology,” Mr. Amare notes. “For passengers traveling to Addis Ababa for business or leisure—whether for the Great Ethiopian Run or any time—this is a new level of convenience and luxury.”
Ethiopian Airlines has five gateways from the United States: Atlanta (ATL), Chicago (ORD), New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Washington Dulles (IAD).
