Mexico’s ambassador to the United States is set to headline a business breakfast in Atlanta March 10

The visit by the Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, the country’s top diplomat in the U.S., comes as three separate trips to Mexico are being planned by Georgia-based organizations in May and July.

The event organized by the Latin American Chamber of Commerce of Georgia also comes ahead of a July 1 review of the USMCA, the successor trade deal to NAFTA that has helped power Mexico past China to become the top U.S. trading partner as of 2023.

That trend has played out in Georgia as well, where Mexico claims the trifecta as the state’s top customer, buyer and total trading partner.

Despite constant threats of tariffs, the state’s trade with Mexico grew 39 percent to $25 billion in 2024, a symptom of supply chains for some U.S.-bound goods shifting back toward the Western Hemisphere

Having three groups head to Mexico is an anomaly for Georgia, where high-level outbound delegations to the country have been scarce.

The Consulate General of Mexico is seizing the moment, highlighting the importance of the trade relationship for Georgia’s competitiveness and that of the broader Southeast region, which both competes and cooperates with the country in industries like automotive and aerospace.

Mr. Moctezuma, the ambassador, is a former of secretary of public education and social development, as well as former senator and interior secretary for Mexico with deep civil-society experience.

The event is set to be held at 8 a.m. at The 1818 Club within the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce building, with the ambassador offering a speech followed by a moderated fireside chat.
