Duluth-based tractor manufacturer AGCO Corp. has appointed Brazil‘s former minister of development, industry and foreign trade to its board of directors.

Luiz Fernando Furlan served as minister from 2003-07. He currently co-chairs the board of BRF Brasil Foods S.A., a manufacturer and exporter of meats, soybeans, poultry and dairy products. He also sits on the board of Spanish telecommunications giant Telefonica S.A.

Mr. Furlan’s experience will provide valuable perspective for AGCO as it builds its business in Brazil, said Martin Richenhagen, AGCO’s chairman, president and CEO.

“Brazil represents a tremendous opportunity for growth in agricultural production,” Mr. Richenhagen said in a news release. “The appointment of Mr. Furlan demonstrates our commitment to maintaining our leadership position in the South American agricultural equipment industry.”

Mr. Furlan replaces the late Francisco Gros, who served on the AGCO board of directors from 2006-10.
