The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has upheld Duluth-based AGCO Corp.’s patent for its Momentum line of planters in the face of a challenge from a Brazilian manufacturer.

Stara S.A., based in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, had requested an inter partes review of AGCO’s patent on Momentum, which is a mark of the company’s Fendt brand.

The USPTO denied Stara’s request for the proceeding before its Patent Trial and Appeal Board, a move that AGCO says strengthens the company’s patents around the world.

South America accounted for about 11 percent of AGCO’s $11.7 billion in sales in 2024, largely driven by Brazil, where the company also boasts a strong manufacturing presence.
