A delegation of 16 Argentine software companies is set to descend on Atlanta next Monday, led by a diplomat with an uncharacteristically strong grasp on technology.
These types of visits aren’t new to Atlanta: Through its Argentina Delivers initiative platforming the hundreds of Argentine companies doing near-shoring work for U.S. tech firms, the Argentine government, represented locally by the Consulate General of Argentina, has made the city a frequent stop for tech-focused delegations to the United States.
But a free opportunity to engage with a founder who has grown two companies to billion-dollar startup status? That comes along with the rarity of a…unicorn.
Ambassador Alejandro “Alec” Oxenford is not just the latest business-focused envoy appointed by President Javier Milei. (In February, Mr. Oxenford succeeded business magnate Gerardo Werthein, who became foreign minister and held the post until a few weeks ago).
But Mr. Oxenford is also a tech practitioner, having co-founded multiple influential e-commerce platforms. His first, DeRemate, was acquired by MercadoLibre, often described as Latin America’s eBay, in the late 1990s. He then went on to found OLX, a network of online classified marketplaces linking sellers in developing-world nations including on Brazil, India, Romania and other countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Later, he co-founded the letgo in the U.S. Both of the latter had attained billion-dollar valuations at his exit.
Mr. Oxenford will deliver a keynote speech before engaging in conversation with Technology Association of Georgia President Larry Williams during an event Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. Learn more here
That discussion will be followed by a chance for Atlanta companies to hold curated “speed meetings” with the visiting Argentine companies during what is being billed as a South Meets South forum. As an added perk, the event will serve as an Argentine wine tasting. Learn more and sign up here
