More than 100 students from Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra and the youth orchestra in Berlin, Landesjugendorchester Berlin, will perform at Atlanta Symphony Hall on Tuesday, Aug.10., as part of a musical and cultural exchange program this summer.
Students from the Atlanta and Berlin symphonies will perform Leonard Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances” from “West Side Story” under conductors Jere Flint, music director of the Atlanta Symphony and Alexander Mickelthwaite of the Landesjugendorchester Berlin.
Other selections include Johannes Brahm’s “Academic Festival Overture,” Georg Katzer’s “Pentagramm” and Franz Liszt’s “Les Preludes.”
The Atlanta concert follows two performances in Germany in June 2003 where 59 students from Atlanta joined students from the youth orchestra in Berlin and Finsterwalde, Germany.
The exchange program is part of the upcoming 30th birthday celebration of Atlanta’s youth symphony. The first rehearsals took place on Dec. 21, 1974. Each year the youth orchestra presents at least three subscription concerts.
