Editor’s note: This is a sponsored post announcing Atlanta Ballet’s backing of Global Atlanta’s Culture coverage. Subscribe to our monthly Culture newsletter here.
Global Atlanta is pleased to announce Atlanta Ballet as the exclusive sponsor of our Culture channel, helping underpin the publication’s continued reporting on arts, books, music and sports in a city with a dynamic international cultural fabric.
Over the last year, Atlanta Ballet’s steadfast support helped enable our annual book review project, reporting on new nonstop flights to global travel destinations like Ethiopia and looks at important cultural moments like Delta Air Lines flying World War II veterans back to Normandy this spring, among many others.
We caught up with marketing director Tricia Ekholm to learn more about what makes Atlanta Ballet a global asset for the city.
Global Atlanta: Tell us a bit more about the Atlanta Ballet and its role in Atlanta’s global landscape.
Ms. Ekholm: Atlanta Ballet attracts dancers, choreographers and designers from all over the world. During the 2023-24 Season, we will bring the U.S. premiere of Coco Chanel: The Life of a Fashion Icon, four world premieres by the next generation of choreographers and a cherished masterpiece to the Atlanta stage. These pieces will be brought to life by Atlanta Ballet’s Company dancers — the talented men and women performing at the top level of their craft who have chosen to call Atlanta home. The best of dance is happening at Atlanta Ballet.
Why is important for you to foster more discussion around Culture in Atlanta, and what do you have in the pipeline that our readers might appreciate?
Dance is an art form that exists in every culture, transcends language, and brings people together. Atlanta Ballet is a regional ballet company producing world-class dance – in Atlanta, for Atlanta.
Launched in Hong Kong to rave reviews, Coco Chanel: The Life of a Fashion Icon played to sold-out crowds and comes to Atlanta in February. This is the only place in North America to see this new work by acclaimed choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. Coco Chanel: The Life of a Fashion Icon brings together an award-winning creative team, with artistic collaboration by Nancy Meckler, original score by Peter Salem and set and costume design by Jérôme Kaplan.
How does the Atlanta Ballet engage with the local community and educational sphere?
Atlanta Ballet‘s Centre for Dance Education has an impact all over the metro area, not only by educating the next generation of dancers but also by giving as many local students as possible the opportunity to be enriched by dance. Our three major locations in West Midtown, Buckhead and Virginia Highland serve over 2,000 students annually.
Some are training for ballet careers, while others seek to include dance as part of a well-rounded plan for wellness and lifelong learning. Atlanta Ballet also embeds instructors in public schools to present a curriculum that includes dance, nutrition, and health to over 1,000 students in underserved communities, 5 days per week, for the entire school year. Finally, our Kids In Step program presents live performances at Cobb Energy Centre to over 40,000 students from Cobb County and Atlanta public schools.
How can Global Atlanta or our readers aid in your outreach?
We are always looking to make connections with the diverse and multicultural communities within Atlanta.
