Construction has begun on Atlanta-based tvsdesign‘s newest project in China, a 700,000-square-foot convention center in the northwestern province of Ningxia.
The Ningxia International Conference Center in Yinchuan, the provincial capital, will be the new home for the China-Arab States Economic and Trade Forum, an annual event launched in 2010.
The concept for the convention center was developed for a design competition tvsdesign won with a local partner. The design incorporates geometric elements as a nod to the Muslim culture of the region.
The Hui people, a mostly Muslim, Chinese-speaking ethnic group, are largely found in Ningxia. China is home to about 20 million Muslims.
When the center opens in 2015, it will be tvsdesign’s fifth convention center built in China. The firm recently won the bid for an expansion of the Nanjing convention center, for which it provided the original design.
