A long-running exchange program bringing business students from Japan’s Obirin University to Atlanta is coming back this year after a pandemic hiatus, prompting a search for local host and “friendship” families for the four-month stints.

Host families are being sought for students that will spend eight weeks in an intensive English program at Georgia Tech, followed by an eight-week stint working with local companies. Host families are obligated to provide two meals a day, transportation, support and a private bedroom with a desk and Wi-Fi. For their trouble, they are to receive an $800 stipend per month during the student’s time here.

Another group of Obirin students will spend the same amount of time living in the Georgia State University dorms, with the same trajectory: first studying English, then taking up a practicum with a company. Friendship families are tasked with welcoming the students, offering camaraderie and helping them experience American life.

The Japan-America Society of Georgia operates the exchange twice a year, but a timeline for the next visit was not announced.  For more information or to fill out an application, visit https://www.jasgeorgia.org/Become-a-Host-Family.
