Last year's decision by Abbott Laboratories Inc. to purchase a Belgian company, Solvay Pharmaceuticals Inc., will result in the loss of 250 jobs for metro Atlanta.
By the end of 2011, Abbott will close Solvay's former U.S. headquarters in Marietta, Abbott spokesman Scott Stoffel told GlobalAtlanta.
Solvay once employed 400 people in Marietta but is now down to 250. The Marietta office provided business support for Solvay and those functions will be shifted to the Abbott headquarters in suburban Chicago. Some Marietta employees will be offered new jobs at Abbott while others will be laid off, Mr. Stoffel said. Abbott bought Solvay's global pharmaceutical business for $6.2 billion.
