OFS, a Japanese optical fiber manufacturer headquartered in the Atlanta suburb of Norcross, is forming a joint venture company in China with Hengtong Optic-Electric Co. Ltd.

The new company will be called Jiangsu OFS Hengtong Optical Technology Co., according to a news release. The joint venture will build a factory in Wujiang, China, for the production of preform, the glass structures used to make optical fiber. Optical fiber is widely used in telephone systems, Internet service and other forms of data transmission.

Terms of the joint venture were not disclosed.

OFS is a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Furukawa Electric Co. Furukawa Electric purchased the optical fiber business from Lucent Technologies Inc. in 2001, creating OFS.

Outside the United States, OFS also has plants in Denmark, Germany and Russia.
