The principal of the Moscow office of Ward Howell, the international search firm, is Alan T. Clack, a native of Atlanta and a 1990 graduate of Emory University.
During an interview at Ward Howell’s office in Buckhead, Mr. Clack said that his interest in Russia stemmed from Russian language courses he took at Emory.
Shortly after his graduation with a psychology degree, he moved to St. Petersburg where, he said, he bartered a $750 fax machine for food, shelter and a job with a local executive search firm.
The match up in St. Petersburg was ideal, he recalled, because the company was just beginning to use psychological testing to select personnel for foreign companies. Although a fledgling group, they were able to find a Russian country manager for Black & Decker, a success which led to others.
Then in early 1991, Mr. Clack met William Potvin, head of the accounting firm Deloitte & Touche’s Moscow office. Mr. Potvin put him in touch with Ward Howell through Deloitte & Touche’s New York office.
Shortly afterward, Mr. Clack was asked to head Ward Howell’s Moscow office, an opportunity which he accepted and persuaded several members of his former firm to join him.
