Newcastle upon Tyne in the North of England is seeking to resuscitate its Sister City relationship formed in 1977 with Atlanta to develop ties between companies, educational institutions and economic development organizations in both regions.
Professor Tony Dickson, pro-vice chancellor of the University of Northumbria located in Newcastle, participated in the delegation which arrived in Atlanta last week. He cited the Georgia Research Alliance, which brings together the research capabilities of a number of local universities, as a potential ally in the development of new ties. Georgia State University, a member of the alliance, already has an exchange program with Northumbria for its MBA students.
Professor Dickson said that the North of England region has been successful in attracting more than 10% of all inward investment to the U.K. between 1985 and 1993, and that Northumbria’s ties with institutions around the world should appeal to businesspeople as well as academics in Georgia.
