The Port of Brunswick in March posted its best month ever for automobile and machinery, handling 42,740 units, according to the Georgia Ports Authority.

The Colonel’s Island Terminal saw 36 percent more traffic than the same month last year.

Cars are known in the shipping industry as roll-on/roll-off cargo, or Ro/Ro.

The economic recovery, renewed consumer demand and facility upgrades accounted for the increase in Ro/Ro traffic, said Curtis Foltz, the authority’s executive director, in a news release.

The Brunswick port’s main automotive customers are BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen.
