A Brazilian-owned chicken giant is set to build its latest facility in the northwest corner of Georgia, investing $400 million and creating 630 jobs in LaFayette.

Pilgrim’s, which was acquired by Brazil’s JBS in 2009, will add the new workers by 2027, bringing its headcount across the state to more than 7,500.

The Walker County facility will focus on prepared foods under the Just Bare, Pilgrim’s and Gold Kist brands in response to increased retail demand.

“Expanding the Pilgrim’s footprint in Georgia highlights our ongoing commitment to the region and our company’s long-term growth strategy,” Fabio Sandri, Pilgrim’s CEO, said in a news release.

The investment, set to break ground this year, will expand the Pilgrim’s presence in the county of 7,000 people, where it already works with poultry producers.

State leaders said Georgia’s agricultural legacy and current strength have laid a foundation on which food packaging, cold-chain logistics and other value-added sectors can build.

Pilgrim’s employs 61,000 people in 14 states, Puerto Rico, Mexico, the U.K., the Ireland and continental Europe.
