China Eastern Airlines is seeking to join the SkyTeam Airline Alliance, which includes Delta Air Lines Inc. and eight other carriers.

Membership in the alliance gives passengers a series of perks on all carriers in the group, including faster check-in, expanded lounge access and the ability to redeem frequent-flier points on the other member airlines.

China Eastern, headquartered in Shanghai, is expected to join the alliance by mid-2011, according to a news release. The airline flies to more than 150 locations in China, Southeast Asia, Europe, North America, South Africa and Australia.

China Southern Airlines is already a SkyTeam member.

Other current members are Aeroflot, Aeromexico, Air France, Alitalia, Czech Airlines, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Korean Air.  There are two associate members: Air Europa and Kenya Airways.
