John L. Clendenin, chairman and chief executive officer of BellSouth Corp.,  and Alon Liel, director general of  the Israel Ministry of Economy and Planning, will be honored at the 1995 Israel Trade Award  Dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 29, in the Grand Ballroom of the SwissÙtel Atlanta  in

Buckhead. 

David Rubin, Israel’s economic minister to North America, will present Mr. Clendenin with the  1995 Israel Trade Award for “outstanding contributions to the development of international trade links with Israel.” The dinner will be hosted by the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce-Southeast Region, which assisted with BellSouth’s bid to develop a cellular network in Israel.  BellSouth was joined by the Safra Group of Brazil and two Israeli companies, Israel Aircraft Industries and Discount Investment Corp.,  to form Cellcom Israel Ltd.

Dr. Liel will receive the chamber’s  first Founder’s Award for his role in establishing the Southeastern branch of the AICC, which now has more than 300 members throughout the region with networking and support groups in 12 cities. He was Israel’s consul                          general in Atlanta from 1991 to 1992.  During that time, he acted as founding chair of the chamber.

After leaving Atlanta in 1992, Dr. Liel served as Israel’s ambassador to South Africa before assuming his current post in which he is responsible for the Israeli government’s plans to develop infrastructure projects with its neighbors.
