Muhtar Kent, president and COO of Coca-Cola Co., was named to the international board of directors of the Special Olympics.
Special Olympics provides sports training and competition to 2.5 million adults and children with intellectual disabilities in 165 countries.
Members of the Special Olympics Board manage the global affairs of Special Olympics games, set policies and programs and oversee management.
Atlanta-based Coke has been a sponsor since the Special Olympics’ establishment in 1968.
The company will be sponsoring the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games, the year’s largest global sports event, to be held in Shanghai Oct. 2 — 11. Coke is the only sponsor supporting the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games and Special Olympics World Games.
