Costa's first U.S. retail shop is in the hometown of its owner, Coca-Cola Co.

The British chain Costa Coffee has opened its first retail coffee shop in the U.S., marking a shift for a brand that is well-known in the United Kingdom and other countries but has so far served the American market through machines and robotic baristas.

Its foothold at the CODA Building in Midtown might seem inevitable given the fact that Atlanta-based beverage giant Coca-Cola Co. bought the brand in 2018 for $5.1 billion, a sign of its continuing evolution away from reliance on so-called “sparkling” beverages.

Founded in 1971, Costa has nearly 4,000 stores globally, nearly half of them in the United Kingdom, along with some 7,000 machines or kiosks in operation around the world.

The new Tech Square location on the corner of West Peachtree and 4th Avenue offers barista-crafted beverages along with baked goods and breakfast and lunch options.
