The Mexican American Business Chamber and DeKalb Technical College are offering English as a Second Language classes for employees of Georgia businesses.
The 12-week course focuses on workplace vocabulary and conversation and is designed for non-English speakers and non-native English speakers wishing to improve their command of the language. Each class, which is to meet for 2 hours twice a week, is designed for one level of English proficiency.
Candidates for the classes must be pre-tested to determine which level class they should enroll in.
“Many of our members are interested in helping people who come to this country to adopt American culture. These classes not only will permit better understanding between employers and employees, but will also open more opportunities for employees to grow within their organizations,” said Beatriz Gasiba, executive director of the Mexican American Business Chamber.
She added that the classes aim to increase employee productivity and job performance as well as retention. The classes could help non-native English speaking employees who are not U.S. citizens to learn enough English to be able to pass the citizenship exam.
Those employees who are undocumented immigrants could, through the class, complete one of the requirements — being proficient in English – that would be part of any immigration reform to adjust their legal status if that option became available, Ms. Gasiba told GlobalAtlanta.
“The Mexican chamber is formed to help our members develop, and facilitating better communication with their employees is a vital part of helping companies grow,” she said.
Pre-testing to determine which level class an employee should register for is to take place on Monday, April 9, and Wednesday, April 11, 5:45-7 p.m., at the Mexican chamber, 5522 New Peachtree Road, Suite129. Chamblee, GA 30341.
Pre-testing costs $30 per employee.
Classes must have a minimum of 12 students and a maximum of 15. They will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6-8 p.m. beginning Monday, April 30 through Wednesday, July 25.
The course fee is $479 per employee.
