Ambassador Discussion — Estonia: Forging a Digital Society

March 4, 2022 at 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Imagine life where the phrase “government bureaucracy” doesn’t make you wince. That life exists in Estonia where 99 percent of public services are available online 24 hours a day. Nearly a third of Estonians vote via the internet. They file their taxes online in under five minutes. Parents of newborns access benefits almost automatically. Estonians are living in the world’s first digital society.
When Estonia gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, its technological resources were obsolete. Estonian leaders viewed this as an extraordinary opportunity to catch up with the West. Today, Estonia is home to more tech unicorns than any other small country globally, thanks to digital immigration and friendly tax rates. (Fun fact: Skype was founded in Estonia in 2003!)
The World Affairs Council of Atlanta will dive into the details with the Ambassador of Estonia to the United States, Kristjan Prikk. Join the council at the Smith Gambrell Russell Law Firm for breakfast on Friday, March 4, 2022, at 8 AM ET. Ambassador Prikk will share insights and answer our questions on Estonia‘s state of affairs, including NATO, Ukraine-Russia tensions, the strengths and risks of its digital society, and more.
