Atlanta Global Studies Symposium: Keynote Speaker, Dr. Sheila S. Walker

April 23, 2021 at 3:30 pm

In the closing keynote address of the Atlanta Global Studies Symposium, co-sponsored by Race Beyond Borders, Sheila S. Walker, a cultural anthropologist and documentary filmmaker, will describe the fascinating and sometimes surprising connections between people and cultures of the Global African Diaspora. Walker’s most recent documentary, “Familiar Faces/Unexpected Places: A Global African Diaspora,” was shown at the United Nations as the 2018 Black History Month program for the UN International Decade for People of African Descent 2015-2024 and was sent for showings at UN Information Centers in the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and Europe. Dr. Walker’s celebration of race and culture as they are experienced outside of the U.S. will leave the audience inspired to consider their own roots and connections to the world and to each other.

Moderator: Dr. Pushpa Parekh, Chair of African Diaspora and the World Program, Spelman College
