Beyond Borders – Canada’s National Elections: A Pivotal Moment for US-Canadian Relations
April 30, 2025 at 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
The outcome of the April 28, 2025, general elections in Canada will significantly impact both domestic affairs and U.S.-Canadian relations, regardless of which candidate wins. Liberal Party leader Mark Carney, a former central banker, is entering the political arena for the first time, while Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre has been a member of Parliament since 2004. The election results will determine whether the winner secures a majority in Parliament or needs to form a coalition. Additionally, President Trump’s harsh rhetoric toward Canada and the imposition of tariffs are expected to influence the election and subsequently affect US-Canada relations. Ambassador (ret.) Charles Shapiro will delve into these topics with Canada experts Allison Gifford and Laura Dawson, Ph.D.
Beyond Borders is a series of virtual dialogues focusing on the United Statesโ ongoing foreign policy re-directs under the Trump Administration. Amb. (ret.) Charles Shapiro, President Emeritus of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta and former U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela, will lead each dialogue with world-class experts in their fields of study and practice.
