From Brexit to Trump: Populism on the March Across the West

Countries from the United Kingdom, to Colombia, to the United States are facing contradicting political narratives with one component in common: populism. Populism has variants: left- and right-wing, from Bernie Sanders to Trump, from Syriza (leftist party in Greece) to the National Party in France. David Rennie, the Washington bureau chief of The Economist magazine, argues American politics are experiencing a shift as right-left labels are less and less useful to define national politics as populism “sweeps the rich, democratic world.”

Rennie, an award winning journalist who has been critical of the Trump Administration in his Lexington column, will speak about how American populism confounds conventional political analysis. He will offer examples from Europe on how to confront it badly, and explain why the U.S. has strengths to deal with populism in a positive way.

Rennie will be in conversation with Robyn Curnow, CNN anchor and host of “CNN’s International Desk with Robyn Curnow,” which airs weekdays at 11:00 a.m. ET.
