Cartooning for Peace: The Art of Democracy

A panel of award-winning editorial cartoonists from around the world will engage in a fun and provocative discussion and cartoon demo on democracy and free speech at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights on October 13, 2016 with an accompanying outdoor exhibition in downtown Atlanta.
Cartooning for Peace founder and one of Le Mondeโs most revered cartoonists, Jean โPlantuโ Plantureaux, along with the Atlanta Journal-Constitutionโs own Pulitzer Prize winner Mike Luckovich and famous Israeli cartoonist Michel Kichka will explore existential questions of a democratic society through their art: in the name of freedom of expression, shall we tolerate anything and everything? What is the role of the press and the artist in a democracy? How can we combine freedom, responsibility and tolerance?
The Art of Democracy will begin at 7:00 p.m., with doors opening at 6:00 p.m. for a pre-event reception and visit of the Center for Civil and Human Rights. Tickets are $15 and available at www.france-atlanta.org.
In conjunction with this event, some forty Cartooning for Peace cartoons will cover the sidewalks of downtown Atlanta from October 13-21 as part of ELEVATE, a temporary public art program of the Mayorโs Office of Cultural Affairs. The free outdoor exhibition can be found on Broad St. SW, between Mitchell St. SW and MLK Jr. SW.
