Consular Conversations: Mexico Consul General Luncheon

Continuing our long tradition of engagement with the Atlanta Consular Corps, Global Atlanta has asked locally based diplomats to participate in a series of frank discussions each month on the state of their countries and their objectives in Atlanta.
For the first event in June, we spoke with U.K. consul general Jeremy Pilmore-Bedford a few weeks before the Brexit vote. Last month, we caught up with Shane Stephens of Ireland ahead of a Georgia Tech football game in Dublin.
On Sept. 21, the series continues with Javier Diaz de Leon, the new consul general of Mexico to the Southeastern United States.
This discussion will come just after Global Atlanta returns from a weeklong reporting trip looking at how the Southeast U.S. both competes and cooperates with Mexico in the key industries of aerospace and auto manufacturing.
Mr. Diaz will discuss:
- U.S.-Mexico ties ahead of the presidential election and misperceptions about bilateral economic engagement
- Mexico’s economic reforms and role in its new role in global value chains
- The impact of Nafta and its future under a possible TPP
The format:
- Catered light lunch with soft drinks and tea
- One-on-one conversation with the Global Atlanta editorial team, followed by moderated audience Q&A
- Discussion covered by Global Atlanta and published in a later article
