Democracy and Authoritarianism in Pakistan’s Electoral Landscape

Pakistan’s democratic development and political stability continue to face significant challenges due to entrenched military interests within the government and widespread public distrust in the electoral process. The 2024 elections were particularly problematic, with substantial delays in the release of official results, leading to widespread allegations of rigging and vote manipulation. Election periods are often marred by violence and security threats, including attacks by militant groups like the Islamic State targeting election offices. The political landscape remains highly volatile, marked by frequent legal disputes and the arrest of prominent figures such as former Prime Minister Imran Khan, which has sparked widespread protests and further instability. Additionally, Pakistan’s military has increasingly consolidated its control over government leaders and functions, further complicating efforts to achieve democratic governance and political stability.
