Emory Law Bederman Lecture: Immigrants, Refugees and Women – International Obligations and the United States

The annual David J. Bederman lecture is presented by the Center for International and Comparative Law.
Judge Rosemary Barkett, Iran-United States Claims Tribunal will give the David J. Bederman lecture this year. The title of her lecture will be, Immigrants, Refugees, and Women: International Obligations and the United States.
In October 2013, Judge Rosemary Barkett was appointed, and now serves, as a member of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal. In 2016, Judge Barkett was elected as Honorary President of the American Society of International Law, and in 2015, the President of the United States appointed Judge Barkett to the Panel of Conciliators for the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes.
Prior to her appointment to the tribunal, Judge Barkett was a member of the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit for approximately 20 years. Before her service in the federal courts, she was the rst woman Justice on the Florida Supreme Court and was chosen by her colleagues to become the state’s rst woman Chief Justice. Judge Barkett has also served as a trial and intermediate appellate judge in Florida.
Judge Barkett has received seven honorary degrees from institutions of higher learning in addition to many prestigious honors and awards from national, state, professional, civic, and charitable groups. Judge Barkett has been honored by the naming of “Rosemary Barkett Appellate America Inn of Court” in Miami, Florida.
