Luncheon and Discussion with Dr. Daniel Klingenfeld

May 16, 2016 at 12:00 am - 2:00 pm

“A New Era? Global Climate Protection Efforts After the Paris Climate Summit”

The conclusion of the climate negotiations in Paris in November 2015 constitutes a landmark for international climate policy: The Paris Agreement defines an ambitious target for climate stabilization, along with a global response strategy for mitigating emissions and for adapting to climatic changes. However, a big gap still exists between reported nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and the temperature guard rail, putting the credibility of global climate policy efforts in doubt. Looking ahead, a successful implementation of the Paris Agreement will depend on a strategy for closing the ambition-action gap. Here, broad-based carbon pricing will have a critical role to play. In his talk, Dr. Klingenfeld will deliver an analysis of the Paris Agreement and also highlight recent findings from climate change research, which are underscoring the urgency to act.
