Nigeria Update: Human Rights & Freedom of Speech Under Siege

The Nigerian government’s recent ban on Twitter is the latest infringement on citizens’ ability to freely express dissent. The announcement also comes in the wake of citizen protests against excessive force by the police against the Nigerian people, including violence perpetrated by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
At the same time, insecurity persists as attacks by Boko Haram insurgents continue to terrorize parts of the country. In spite of the onslaught, Nigerian civil society remains vibrant and continues its attempts to hold the government accountable.
What can human rights organizations and the international community do to defend human rights in Nigeria? What is the role of civil society to protect freedoms of speech and expression in the country?
Join the World Affairs Council of Atlanta in a discussion about Nigeria with Kehinde Togun, Senior Director for Policy and Government Relations at Humanity United. Mr. Togun has led global democracy and governance programs in the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa for much of the last 15 years. He will give us an update on the current situation in Nigeria and recent attacks on human rights, civil liberties, and free speech.
