A Note on Opera: Giuseppi Verdi’s “Don Carlo”

Join us for our latest lecture in our “A Note on Opera” series as we look at Giuseppe Verdi’s “Don Carlo.”
The plays of Goethe’s close friend Friedrich von Schiller have inspired operas composed by as diverse a group as Donizetti, Tchaikovsky, and Verdi; Verdi alone based no less than five of his operas on Schiller’s works. His adaptation of Schiller’s “Don Carlos” was his largest and most innovative composition to date. Set in Habsburg Spain during the reign of Philip II, it’s a sweeping tale of conflicts within the family that rules a quarter of the world and of individuals against an oppressive theocracy.
