Tropical Trump? What’s Next for Brazil Under Bolsonaro
January 23, 2019 at 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Brazil wanted change. Using the rhetoric of the far-right, Jair Bolsonaro, an unconventional politician, delivered change even before taking office. Jair Bolsonaro has been called the “Trump of the Tropics” as there are many parallels in their populist style and policies. Both are political outsiders, both ignore the conventions of political correctness and both have turbulent relationships with the media. Now-President Bolsonaro has a tough job ahead: transforming his nationalist, pro-growth rhetoric into results. And he needs to deliver results quickly – Brazilians have a history of turning on presidents and the Congress does not shy away from impeachment.
Dr. Otaviano Canuto, Executive Director at the World Bank Group, and former State Secretary for Finance of Brazil, will share his thoughts on what the future holds for Brazil in the Bolsonaro administration.
Reception 5:30 PM | Discussion 6:15 PM
