Why NAFTA Matters

August 21, 2018 at 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

The future of NAFTA is in danger. Negotiators missed the deadline to complete NAFTA 2.0 in time for Congress to pass this year. In the meantime, the original NAFTA is on life support. The June 8-9 G7 Summit ended in public bickering between President Trump and Prime Minister Trudeau, which highlighted the political issues – and resentments — behind the negotiations. Whether the outcome is a new agreement or keeping the 25-year-old agreement in place or replacing NAFTA with a US-Mexico and a US-Canada agreement will have major impact in the U.S. economy for years to come. Georgia has a lot at stake, especially in the agricultural sector.

Canadian Consul General Nadia Theodore, Mexican Consul General Javier Díaz de León, and trade expert, Laura Dawson, Director of the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Canada Institute, will discuss why NAFTA matters. President and CEO of the Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank, Raphael Bostic, will moderate the discussion.
