SUMMARY:Cirque Kalabanté – “Afrique en Cirque” | Guinean Acrobats
DESCRIPTION:Created by Yamoussa Bangoura and inspired by daily life in his native Guinea\, “Afrique en Cirque” (Africa in Circus) presented by performers of Cirque Kalabanté portrays the beauty\, youth and artistry of West African culture. \n\n\n\nThe Rialto stage will vibrate with energy representing the strength\, agility and joys of young West Africans through a show that is colorful beyond its costumes\, scenery and staging. Acrobats will execute gravity-defying moves and human pyramids accompanied by contemporary Afro-Jazz\, percussion and kora. \n\n\n\nAfter joining Guinea’s original Circus Baobab as a young man\, Bangoura’s dream of founding a school of circus arts evolved through his own performances in and contributions to several Canadian theatrical productions including Cirque du Soleil\, Cirque Eloize and Cavalia. In 2018\, he recruited his twin sisters\, brothers and cousins to launch their own school and studio in Montreal offering classes in percussion\, cirque and African dance. \n\n\n\nAudiences will enjoy Cirque Kalabanté’s acrobatic skills and achievements\, which also support the Company’s humanitarian mission to help the Guinean community from which the family originated. \n\n\n\n“With explosive drumming and dance routines\, the group delivered mind-blowing acrobatic sequences with extraordinary precision!”              — Vice Magazine \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Decolonizing Knowledge\, a Conversation with Felwine Sarr
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nDue to inclement weather related to Hurricane Helene\, this event has been postponed. We will update you with more information at a later date. \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the annual France-Atlanta series organized by Georgia Tech and the Embassy of France in the United States. \n\n\n\nOne of the great intellectuals of our time\, committed to the decolonization of knowledge from an African perspective\, Senegalese thinker Felwine Sarr is invited for the first time in Atlanta to present his work and his intellectual journey. Felwine Sarr will be in conversation with Lauren Tate Baeza\, Curator of African Art at the High Museum of Art and Axelle Karera\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Emory University. \n\n\n\nIn 2021\, Time magazine featured Felwine Sarr as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. His thinking is developing in different directions and on several fronts at once. With philosopher Achille Mbembe\, he is the initiator of the “Ateliers de la pensée”\, which has been bringing together writers\, thinkers\, artists and academics from Africa and the diaspora in Dakar since 2016. The same year\, he published Afrotopia [University of Minnesota Press\, 2020]\, an essay on the future of the continent and the need to pursue decolonization. Together with art historian Bénédicte Savoy\, he is also the author of the landmark “Rapport sur la restitution du patrimoine culturel africain” [The Restitution of African Cultural Heritage. Toward a New Relational Ethics\, 2018]\, logical compensation for colonial predation. Felwine Sarr now teaches at Duke University\, where he brings knowledge produced in Africa and promotes an ecology of knowledge from different geographies and traditions. More recently\, he has played a major role\, alongside numerous intellectuals\, activists and citizens\, in the defense of Senegalese democracy\, and advocates a deepening of democracy in Africa. Today\, he is working to create a “pluriversity” in Dakar\, a university based on the plurality of knowledge. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:The Inequality of Parts… The Beauty Of The Whole by Barkinado Bocoum
DESCRIPTION:Barkinado’s work often resembles an assembly of mosaics\, each a part of something infinitely larger\, and each oddly unsettling the other parts and yet they come together in a beautiful whole. The origin of this style of painting is simple in that initially he lacked the resources to purchase proper canvases and so he used simple A4 papers. As he filled each one\, he simply added more and more of them\, taping them together to create large figurative works. Later he realized that taping them together and off center seems to refract light and images in complex fractured portraits. Though each sheet has its own significance taken together they weave a whole albeit with multiple and distinctive perspectives. The gaze of his subjects is often weary and melancholy – almost as if their incredible beauty is too heavy a load to carry. It is this gaze that lends the added perspective of a peoples gazed upon – looking back at the world with a deep understanding that almost says: ‘you can’t even begin to understand me.’ \n\n\n\nRegister Today! \n\n\n\nAnnouncement from aKAZ! ATL: \n\n\n\nThe trials and tribulations of running a trans-continental art gallery mean that sometimes: \n\n\n\nthe art gets here and the artist doesn’t\, and sometimes\, the artist arrives and the work does not! \n\n\n\nBarkinado arrived on Monday this week minus his artwork. Air France just informed us that the artwork has been located – and – it is still in Dakar. They promise to expedite it. But clearly we can’t open the show this Sunday and so with a heavy heart we are rescheduling the Opening of Barkinado Bocoum’s ‘The Inequality of Parts … the Beauty of the Whole to Saturday\, September 21 at 3:00 pm AND the PARTY will be even better. The good news is that Barkinado will hang out in the ATL until then and you will all still be able to meet him. \n\n\n\nSee you on Saturday\, Sept 21 at 3:00 pm- and once again our sincere apologies. \n\n\n\nGreetings\, \n\n\n\nAnja\, Jumbe\, Jean Patrick Guichard (Gallery Miriam) and Barkinado \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
