SUMMARY:Limited-time Art Exhibit Featuring Works of Ghanaian Artists “Gospel” and Quarshie Tornu
DESCRIPTION:Loews Atlanta Hotel and Atlanta-based artist Lisa KaiRobinson will co-host a pop-up art exhibit featuring the works of Ghanaian artists Kwesi Atta Kakra Asiedu who goes by “Gospel” and Quarshie Tornu on Saturday\, September 16 from 4 – 8 p.m. and Sunday\, September 17 from 1 – 4 p.m. While the art exhibit is free to attend\, advanced RSVPs are required as the space is limited. \n\n\n\nRobinson\, an active figure in the Atlanta community and prominent realtor who recently began to explore her personal artistry through paint\, joined a friend on an ancestorial trip to Ghana in June 2023. During their exploration of the capital city of Accra and other smalltowns along the coast\, Robinson came across a visual artist who goes by “Gospel.” She learned that painting is not only his passion\, but also his primary method of communication. “My inspiration in painting is to bring out the bold and beautiful colors of my hometown\, Elmina\, and to show another side beyond the darkshadow of slavery\,” explains Gospel. “We were a vibrant people before the Portuguese arrived and we have remained so\, despite losing so many of our brothers and sisters to the Transatlantic Slave Trade.” \n\n\n\nGospel depicts the Ghanaian people in an array of captivating colors\, patchwork and textures such as a woman cradling a child\, where both are intertwined with flowers and patterns found throughout theirnatural landscape; townspeople adorned in their cultural attire\, while seamlessly moving throughout their day; and a sea of tribesmen on horses ready for battle. “When I saw his work and learned of his story\, I was compelled to do something that brought his artistry to a wider audience and gain the recognition he deserves. His art needs to be shared\,” said Robinson.“Loews Atlanta Hotel is ideally located in the heart of Midtown – the art and culture hub of the city – making it an easy and reliable location to host this meaningful exhibit.” \n\n\n\nGospel is a twin and the fourth child of eight from Elmina\, Ghana – the same location as Elmina Castle. The notorious location was first established as a trade settlement\, though later became one of the most pivotal stops on the route of the Atlantic slave trade. His parents were hard-working fishers\, though were unable to financially support his education past the sixth grade. He was drawn to paint\, and began to apprentice with a Nigerian man Gospel refers to as Mr. Ape. After three years\, Gospel began painting on his own and has been doing so for the past seven years. Now\, his goal is to support others in his community through art education.Quarshie Tornu is also a Ghanaian artist\, sculptor and educator whose work has appeared internationally and currently at the National Museum of Ghana. Born in Accra\, Ghana in 1974\, he was educated at the Martech College of Arts\, Ghanatta College of Art and Design\, Oluwade Creative Art\, Limpopo College of Arts and Shinlo Tiegio College of Art. He mentors young artists and works with creative communities to help them develop new ideas. Quarshie describes his style of working as seminal-abstract he creates images from his own imagination. Quarshie says\, “My inspiration as a painter comes from nature and environments\, and the beauty of our rich Ghanaian and African culture. I believe art expresses everyday happiness\, and so every painting of mine has a unique and rich story to tell. Lifeto me is meaningless without art or artist.” \n\n\n\nA portion of the proceeds from this weekend’s art sales will support the Queen of Apostles Boarding School\, a public Catholic primary boarding school for girls\, in Elmina\, Ghana. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:2023 Sabar Rek Atlanta Conference & Cultural Event
DESCRIPTION:Every Year. Every Fall. Every October. The 2023 Sabar Rek Atlanta Conference & Cultural Event takes individuals on a cultural ride of the folkloric art forms of West Africa. This 3-day educational and cultural arts experience\, curated by artist Assane Kouyaté\, uncovers ngueweul (griot) traditions exclusive to Wolof and Serer heritage and diverse ethnic groups of Senegal / the Senegambia region. Griot tradition is revered and passed down through generations in specific family lines. Kouyaté assembles a masterful team of US-based indigenous Senegalese artists to help preserve and enhance the traditional experience. \n\n\n\nThe conference is unique due to its focus on SABAR rather than djembe art forms. The term sabar has multiple meanings – referring to the dance style\, the family of drums played with one hand and a stick\, as well as the communal event that draws individuals to extemporize with live rhythms. Conference kick-off is Fri Oct-6 and extends till Sun Oct-8\, providing 15 opportunities for traditional dance/drum – 12 dance sessions (sabar\, kutiro\, serer\, serouba) and 3 drum (sabar). \n\n\n\nFollowing Saturday’s daytime activities\, participants can join in for SUPPER & SABAR – a small and intimate late-night ‘tanebeer’ or communal gathering to engage in dialogue\, indulge in West African cuisine\, a mini fashion showcase and music/dj-traditional and popular Senegalese mbalax beats. \n\n\n\nCost/Session: $22 Gen Adm | $13 Special (Youth\, Seniors\, Person w/Disabilities\, Community Partners and South Fulton Residents). Early Bird and School/Educational Packages also available. \n\n\n\nFor more information visit: www.sabarrekatlanta.org Email: info@sabarrekatlanta.org or Follow on FB or IG: @kouyatejeli AND @sabarrekatlanta \n\n\n\nThis project is presented in partnership with South Fulton Institute. Funding for this program is provided in part by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners. Support is provided by Atlanta’s West African businesses and community groups\, Sabar Rek Atlanta Inc.\, and Kouyate Jeli. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Dutch Art in a Global Age: Masterpieces from the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston
DESCRIPTION:Observers in the seventeenth century described the Netherlands as the world’s marketplace. Dutch merchants possessed a capitalist mindset and benefited from innovations in naval and military technology. The Dutch East India Company\, the world’s first multinational corporation\, was founded in 1602 to dominate trade in the Pacific and Indian Oceans\, forever changing the global economy. New commodities flowed to the Dutch Republic and made a small nation immensely rich. This in turn fueled an artistic boom. The most famous Dutch artists in the seventeenth century—Hals\, Rembrandt\, Ruisdael\, Ruysch—are still admired today. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition explores how international travel and trade transformed Dutch art and society. Still life paintings feature imported products; seascapes\, landscapes\, and maps reveal where these products came from. A section including cityscapes and maps addresses Amsterdam’s rise as Europe’s commercial hub. The focus then turns to Dutch portraits\, both painted and printed. Local landscapes show how exposure to the world’s wonders paradoxically reinforced pride in Dutch topography. The exhibition concludes with beautiful objects in silver and ceramic and depictions of daily life\, demonstrating the coexistence of the familiar and the foreign. Throughout\, this exhibition emphasizes artistic achievement while encouraging visitors to consider the human costs of global commerce. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:The Inequality of Parts… The Beauty Of The Whole by Barkinado Bocoum
DESCRIPTION:Barkinado’s work often resembles an assembly of mosaics\, each a part of something infinitely larger\, and each oddly unsettling the other parts and yet they come together in a beautiful whole. The origin of this style of painting is simple in that initially he lacked the resources to purchase proper canvases and so he used simple A4 papers. As he filled each one\, he simply added more and more of them\, taping them together to create large figurative works. Later he realized that taping them together and off center seems to refract light and images in complex fractured portraits. Though each sheet has its own significance taken together they weave a whole albeit with multiple and distinctive perspectives. The gaze of his subjects is often weary and melancholy – almost as if their incredible beauty is too heavy a load to carry. It is this gaze that lends the added perspective of a peoples gazed upon – looking back at the world with a deep understanding that almost says: ‘you can’t even begin to understand me.’ \n\n\n\nRegister Today! \n\n\n\nAnnouncement from aKAZ! ATL: \n\n\n\nThe trials and tribulations of running a trans-continental art gallery mean that sometimes: \n\n\n\nthe art gets here and the artist doesn’t\, and sometimes\, the artist arrives and the work does not! \n\n\n\nBarkinado arrived on Monday this week minus his artwork. Air France just informed us that the artwork has been located – and – it is still in Dakar. They promise to expedite it. But clearly we can’t open the show this Sunday and so with a heavy heart we are rescheduling the Opening of Barkinado Bocoum’s ‘The Inequality of Parts … the Beauty of the Whole to Saturday\, September 21 at 3:00 pm AND the PARTY will be even better. The good news is that Barkinado will hang out in the ATL until then and you will all still be able to meet him. \n\n\n\nSee you on Saturday\, Sept 21 at 3:00 pm- and once again our sincere apologies. \n\n\n\nGreetings\, \n\n\n\nAnja\, Jumbe\, Jean Patrick Guichard (Gallery Miriam) and Barkinado \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
