SUMMARY:Efrén Olivares in conversation with Laura Rivera - My Boy Will Die of Sorrow
DESCRIPTION:The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and A Cappella Books welcome author and Deputy Legal Director of the Immigrant Justice Project at Southern Poverty Law Center Efrén C. Olivares to The Carter Center for a discussion on his new book\, “My Boy Will Die of Sorrow: A Memoir of Immigration From the Front Lines” on Wednesday July 27\, 2022\, at 7 PM. The author will appear in conversation with Laura Rivera\, director of SPLC’s Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative (SIFI). \nThis deeply personal perspective from a human rights lawyer—whose work on the front lines of the fight against family separations in South Texas intertwines with his own story of immigrating to the United States at thirteen—reframes the United States’ history as a nation of immigrants but also a nation against immigrants. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the venue. Masks are optional. \n  \nAbout the Author\nEfrén C. Olivares is the Deputy Legal Director of the Immigrant Justice Project at Southern Poverty Law Center. He was the lead lawyer in a successful landmark petition to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights on behalf of families separated under the Zero Tolerance policy. He previously directed the Racial and Economic Justice Program at the Texas Civil Rights Project. His writings on immigration policy have also been published by the New York Times\, USA Today\, and Newsweek\, and he has testified before Congress and at briefings on Capitol Hill about immigration and border policies. Part of his work representing separated families was featured in the CBS News documentary “The Faces of Family Separation\,” released in October 2019. He has also been interviewed as an expert attorney on immigrants’ rights issues on numerous TV and radio shows\, and was featured in John Legend’s “Can’t Just Preach” series. \nOlivares was the first member of his family to attend college. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Yale Law School. \n  \nAbout the Conversation Partner\nFor the past decade\, Laura Rivera has worked in partnership with immigrant and BIPOC communities in the South to advance and defend their legal and human rights. She has contributed to the movement to end the detention of immigrants by litigating class action cases against government agencies and directing a program that provides direct representation to detained immigrants in removal proceedings\, the Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative of the Southern Poverty Law Center. She has also represented farmworkers in wage theft and trafficking cases as part of the Farmworker Division of the Georgia Legal Services Program.  Laura is committed to practicing community lawyering\, centering directly impacted people in her work\, and building coalitions. Previously\, Laura worked as a journalist in New York and Puerto Rico. Laura is a proud native of Puerto Rico and is fluent in Spanish. She lives in Decatur with her wife and dogs and enjoys spending time with her family\, hiking\, and cooking.

SUMMARY:Authors Amplified: Hannah Palmer's 'Flight Path: A Search for Roots beneath the World's Busiest Airport'
DESCRIPTION:Global Atlanta’s Authors Amplified series highlighting Georgia voices in global affairs continues with an in-person interview with Hannah Palmer on her first book released\, Flight Path: A Search for Roots beneath the World’s Busiest Airport. \nTickets for the in-person reception are $15 each and include light bites and wine\, beer\, and water available. \nThere will be a meet and greet at 5:00 p.m. in advance of the interview at 5:30 P.M. Can’t make it? The interview portion of this event will also be broadcast and viewable free of charge via Zoom. Please select your preferred option when registering. \nSponsored by Gene Kansas Commercial Real Estate: \n \nHosted by Constellations\, home to the Global Atlanta offices:  \n \nAbout the Book\nIn the months leading up to the birth of her first child\, Hannah Palmer discovers that all three of her childhood houses have been wiped out by the expansion of Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Having uprooted herself from a promising career in publishing in her adopted Brooklyn\, Palmer embarks on a quest to determine the fate of her lost homes—and of a community that has been erased by unchecked Southern progress. \nPalmer’s journey takes her from the ruins of kudzu-covered\, airport-owned ghost towns to carefully preserved cemeteries wedged between the runways; into awkward confrontations with airport planners\, developers\, and even her own parents. Along the way\, Palmer becomes an amateur detective\, an urban historian\, and a mother. \nLyrically chronicling the overlooked devastation and beauty along the airport’s fringe communities in the tradition of John Jeremiah Sullivan and Leslie Jamison\, Palmer unearths the startling narratives about race\, power\, and place that continue to shape American cities. \nPart memoir\, part urban history\, Flight Path: A Search for Roots beneath the World’s Busiest Airport is a riveting account of one young mother’s attempt at making a home where there’s little home left. \n  \nAbout the Author\nHannah Palmer works as an urban designer in Atlanta. She writes about the intersection of southern stories and urban landscapes for venues like Art Papers\, Atlanta Magazine\, Southern Cultures\, and Canopy Atlanta. A graduate of Agnes Scott College\, she earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Sewanee: The University of the South. She lives on the southside with her husband and sons. Flight Path is her first book. \n  \nAbout the Series\nGeorgia’s deep pool of international expertise is sometimes hidden in the ivory towers of academia or overshadowed by looming national figures. Sought-after thought leaders sometimes shine globally while being ignored in their own backyard. \nWith Authors Amplified\, a monthly series of book talks open to subscribers and the public\, Global Atlanta showcases authoritative local voices in foreign affairs and international business while highlighting the state’s intellectual contributions to important global conversations. \nThe Authors Amplified series is presented by the Atlanta Global Studies Center (AGSC)\, a partnership of Georgia Institute of Technology and Georgia State University\, funded in part by a US Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant\, with a mission to empower the metro region’s global agenda.

SUMMARY:The Ramayana in Art
DESCRIPTION:In the 17th and 18th centuries\, artists produced gloriously illustrated Ramayanas for both Hindu and Muslim rulers. In a lecture titled Beyond Hindu and Muslim: The Courtly Ramayanas of North India\, Debra Diamond\, curator of South and Southeast Asian art at the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery\, compares four illustrated Ramayanas and explores the diverse meanings of the epic during this period. She will consider how Sanskrit\, Persian\, and Hindi Ramayana manuscripts variously inflected the epic narrative\, and what they reveal about the mechanisms though which a shared Indo-Islamic elite culture was forged. \nThis lecture will be held in Ackerman Hall on Level Three of the Carlos Museum. It is free and open to the Emory community and the public

SUMMARY:Spruill Center For The Arts Presents Homecoming By Ilona Cutts
DESCRIPTION:Finnish-born artist\, Ilona Cutts exhibits her new series of paintings\, HOMECOMING. Having spent much of her life as a nomad\, moving from country to country\, Cutts has been searching for Home most of her life. She has the eye of a wanderer\, like a plant without roots. It is this rootlessness that has formed her artistic style where a myriad of cultures can be seen in her fantastical figures and dreamlike landscapes. After recently becoming a US Citizen\, Cutts has begun to put down roots and discover the elusive feeling of Home. In her new body of work\, HOMECOMING\, Cutts explores this idea of Home and what it means to her and others. \nOPENING RECEPTION: Thursday\, January 20\, 6-9 pm\nARTIST TALK: Saturday\, February 5\, 2 pm \nAbout the Artist\nIlona Cutts \nIlona Cutts (born Sampovaara) studied Fine Arts at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design. In 1995 she received her BFA in painting from Kankaanpää Art College\, in Finland. Ilona’s paintings have been exhibited internationally in numerous solo and group Shows. She has exhibited in Finland\, Mexico\, the USA\, France and Spain. Her work can be found in important collections such as the Oulu Museum of Modern Art in Oulu\, Finland. Her latest group show in Finland was at SINKKA\, Contemporary Art Museum of Kerava in Finland\, and participated in 2 group shows at Stone Sparrow Gallery in New York City in 2020. \nBorn to a diplomatic family\, her family continuously moved from country to country since her birth in 1972. She lived in Argentina\, Poland\, the U.K\, Mexico and Spain. She spent 21yrs in Mexico which deeply impacted her being and the art she makes. \nAs her family was continually moving from country to country as a child\, Ilona often felt alone as she had to say goodbye to her friends. So as not to feel lonely she began drawing at a very early age and found solice in the creatures she painted. \nIlona and her Mother have a very special bond. Her Mother collected Art and antiques and encouraged Ilona to see beauty all around observing nature and animals. Surrounded by art and antiques Ilona had the chance to observe and study art in many forms. Her Mother crossed over to the Other Side in 2016\, their special bond continues. \nIlona’s paintings center on anthropomorphic creatures or girl like figures\, surrounded by nature or objects of obscure symbolic and ethereal meaning. Her narrative storytelling is both cute and cruel\, at times disclosing her own personal views on the delicate relationship between man and spirit nature. \nCurrently Ilona is working on a new body of work for upcoming exhibitions\, she also teaches oil painting and mentors other artists who are interested in pursuing a career in painting. \nIlona moved to the US in 2016. She and her husband John\, their Shar-Pei\, Liisa Lightray and their cat\, Frida Katlo all live in Atlanta in a romantic white house. \nDaily Parking\nThe parking entrance is located on Meadow Lane. Turn right after entering the complex. Marked parking spots are located on the right\, near the gallery’s garden. Spaces on the left are first come first serve. Overflow parking is available on terraced levels below the gallery. \nContact gallery@spruillarts.org with inquiries.

SUMMARY:The Rise of China Inc.: How the Chinese Communist Party Transformed China into a Giant Corporation
DESCRIPTION:Book Presentation – The Rise of China Inc.: How the Chinese Communist Party Transformed China into a Giant Corporation\nLeveraging its absolute power\, low human rights advantage\, and tolerance by other countries\, the Chinese Communist Party has transformed China into a giant corporation. Living and working are not rights but privileges granted by the party. State-owned firms are business units or subsidiaries\, private firms are joint ventures\, and foreign firms are franchisees of the party. ‘China\, Inc.\,’ enjoys the agility of a firm and the vast resources of a state. Meanwhile\, foreign firms competing with Chinese firms can find themselves matched against the mighty Chinese state. China\, Inc. will interest many readers: it will compel business scholars to rethink state-firm relationships; assist multinational business practitioners in formulating effective strategies; aid policymakers in countering China’s expansion; and inform the public of the massive corporate organization China has become and how democracies can effectively deal with it. \nShaomin Li is Professor and Eminent Scholar at Old Dominion University. His research has appeared in Journal of International Business Studies\, Harvard Business Review\, The Economist\, The Wall Street Journal\, and The Financial Times. He is author of Bribery and Corruption in Weak Institutional Environments (Cambridge University Press\, 2019). \nCo-Sponsors: \n\nAtlanta Council on International Relations\nChina Research Center\nOld Dominion University Strome College of Business

SUMMARY:Arcadias: A Conversation with Emmanuelle Bayamack-Tam and Lauren Groff
DESCRIPTION:Diving into literary arcadias on the 150th anniversary of the Commune. \nJoin the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and Emory University for Ideas and Ideals: Strong Female Voices\, a monthly online gathering exploring how we redefine power\, consent\, and submission. \nModerated by Katy Waldman. \nEmmanuelle Bayamack-Tam makes her English-language debut with Arcadia\, a mind-blowing manifesto for the abolition of sexual\, geographical and even literary frontiers… At the tender age of six\, Farah moves into a community in harmony with nature. Its spiritual leader preaches equality\, non-violence\, anti-speciesism\, and uninhibited desire for all\, regardless of gender\, age\, looks\, or ability. At fifteen\, Farah learns she is intersex\, and begins to explore her own desires beyond the confines of gender. What\, Farah asks\, is a man or a woman? What does it mean to be part of a community? What is utopia when there are refugees seeking shelter who cannot enter? \nLauren Groff is the author of another Arcadia\, this one set in the fields and forests of western New York State in the late 1960s. Several dozen idealists set out to live off the land\, founding a commune centered on the grounds of a decaying mansion. Arcadia follows a lyrical\, rollicking\, tragic\, and exquisite utopian dream from its hopeful start through its heyday and beyond. \nAs their characters subvert contemporary conceptions of normative sexuality\, capitalist culture\, and environmental destruction\, our speakers ponder whether utopias are doomed by definition. They’ll ask what kind of dreams can be fathomed\, what borders redefined what bounds or relations amended. \nEmmanuelle Bayamack-Tam has published twelve novels and two plays with P.O.L\, including three novels under the pseudonym Rebecca Lighieri. She is a founding member of the interdisciplinary association Autres et Pareils and co-director of Éditions Contre-Pied. Arcadia\, won the Prix du Livre Inter. It was shortlisted for the Prix Femina\, the Prix Médicis\, and Prix de Flore. (Translation by Ruth Diver for Seven Stories Press) \nLauren Groff is the author of The Monsters of Templeton (Hachette)\, Delicate Edible Birds (Hachette)\, and Arcadia (Hyperion Books)\, a New York Times Notable Book\, winner of the Medici Book Club Prize\, and finalist for the L.A. Times Book Award. Her novel\, Fates and Furies (Riverhead Books)\, was a finalist for the National Book Award in Fiction\, the National Book Critics Circle Award\, the Kirkus Award and was a New York Times Notable book and Bestseller. Her Florida (Riverhead Books) was a finalist for the National Book Award. In 2017\, she was named by Granta Magazine as one of the Best of Young American Novelists of her generation. \nKaty Waldman is a staff writer at The New Yorker\, where she writes about books\, literature\, and more. Previously\, she was a staff writer at Slate and the host of the “Slate’s Audio Book Club” podcast. She won the National Book Critics Circle’s Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing in 2019 and the American Society of Magazine Editors Award for journalists younger than thirty in 2018. \nThis series\, organized by the Cultural Services Book Department is made possible through the support of the Institut Français\, Paris.

SUMMARY:Authors Amplified Series: Isabella Alexander-Nathani\, 'Burning at Europe's Borders'
DESCRIPTION:Global Atlanta’s Authors Amplified series highlighting Georgia voices continues with a virtual interview with Dr. Isabella Alexander-Nathani\, anthropologist\, filmmaker and author of the recently released book Burning at Europe’s Borders: An Ethnography on the African Migrant Experience in Morocco\, which features an accompanying documentary The Burning by Small World Films\, Dr. Alexander-Nathani’s production company. \nAbout the Book: \nIn her heart-pounding and courageous debut\, Dr. Isabella Alexander-Nathani uncovers an unseen side of our global migrant and refugee crisis. \nBurning at Europe’s Borders invites readers inside the lives of the world’s largest population of migrants and refugees–the hundreds of thousands who are trapped in hidden forest camps and forgotten detention centers at Europe’s southernmost borders in North Africa. “Hrig\,” the Arabic term for “illegal immigration\,” translates to “burning.” It signifies a migrant’s decision to burn their papers\, in order to avoid identification and repatriation on their long journeys to safer shores. But it also signifies their decision to burn their past lives\, sacrificing themselves in hopes of reaching a future on the other side of the Mediterranean Sea. Alexander-Nathani examines this process of “burning\,” traveling thousands of miles alongside those who have fled war and extreme poverty across the African continent only to find themselves trapped in Libya\, Algeria\, and Morocco. This book exposes the political agreements that have led to Europe’s control over African borders and the illicit practices that continue to mold North African countries into brutal holding cells for our world’s most vulnerable. \nBurning at Europe’s Borders introduces new ways of doing anthropological research in the modern era\, as Alexander-Nathani skillfully weaves images and individual stories into her analysis of changing migration flows at our world’s most critical border crossings. Her creative mixed-methods approach included community filmmaking practices and over three years of ethnographic research in African smuggling rings\, hidden migrant brotherhoods\, and European Union-funded detention centers. This is an ideal cross-over book\, promising to engage students\, scholars\, policymakers\, and popular audiences seeking to step inside the heart of our world’s greatest humanitarian crisis. \nBurning at Europe’s Borders is a volume in the series ISSUES OF GLOBALIZATION: CASE STUDIES IN CONTEMPORARY ANTHROPOLOGY\, which examines the experiences of individual communities in our contemporary world. Each volume offers a brief and engaging exploration of a particular issue arising from globalization and its cultural\, political\, and economic effects on certain peoples or groups. \nAbout the Author: \nDr. Isabella Alexander-Nathani is an award-winning writer\, filmmaker\, educator\, and human rights activist. Trained as a cultural anthropologist\, her work is motivated by her belief that storytelling has the power to humanize complex political issues and bring positive social change. Her latest book\, Burning at Europe’s Borders (Oxford University Press\, 2020) and related documentary film The Burning (Small World Films\, 2020) uncover the human sides of our global migrant and refugee crisis. She currently serves as Founder and CEO of Small World Films\, a non-profit production studio\, which uses grounded research and social impact storytelling to lift the voices of marginalized populations to the global stage and fight for international policy change. \nIsabella’s work has been featured on BBC\, CNN\, NPR\, PRI\, and Al Jazeera\, and she is a regular contributor to SAPIENS\, where she writes a monthly column called “Borders.” Her recent speaking programs have brought her to stages around the world\, including the United Nations General Assembly and the Parliament of the World’s Religions\, where she has delivered keynote addresses on human rights to audiences of more than 10\,000. In 2016\, The American Anthropological Association presented her with the “Emerging Leader in Anthropology” award\, and her latest projects have been supported by grants from The National Science Foundation. She is proud to serve on the Advisory Board for several non-profit organizations\, including The Global Village Project\, the first school designed specifically for refugee girls; Stories Found\, an organization equipping African youth with filmmaking skills and technology; and SAPIENS\, a digital journal focused on connecting social science research to the public. \nOriginally from the southern United States\, Isabella has called New York\, Paris\, Chicago\, Rabat\, Atlanta\, and Bamako home over the years. She earned her degrees from New York University (BA)\, the University of Chicago (MA)\, Emory University (MA\, PhD)\, and the Spéos Institute in France (MFA)\, and she has held a faculty positions in the Departments of Anthropology and Film Studies at Emory University and the Department of Social Sciences at Université Mohammed V\, Morocco’s National University. While her work frequently brings her to New York\, Geneva\, and across North Africa\, she now happily calls Santa Barbara\, California home\, where she lives with her partner\, Amit Alexander-Nathani\, their son\, and their two rescue dogs\, Willow and Bear. \nAbout the Series: \nGeorgia’s deep pool of international expertise is sometimes hidden in the ivory towers of academia or overshadowed by looming national figures.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Hin Bredendieck: From Aurich to Atlanta
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe Georgia Tech Library welcomes Gloria Köepnick and Rainer Stamm in conversation with Dean Leslie Sharp for a lively discussion of their 2020 book Hin Bredendieck: From Aurich to Atlanta. This event is free and open to all. \n\nAbout the book: Hin Bredendieck (1904–95) graduated from the Bauhaus and was a versatile designer and pioneering teacher of design. A native of Aurich\, in East Friesland in Germany\, he was a student at the Bauhaus in Dessau from 1927 to 1930. During his time as a student there\, Bredendieck worked with Marianne Brandt to design famous lamps such as the “Kandem Bedside Table Lamp\,” which can be found on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. In 1937\, Bredendieck emigrated to the United States\, where he was appointed as a teacher at the New Bauhaus Chicago. From there\, he moved on to become the founding director of the Institute for Industrial Design at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta\, and from this perch he established himself as one of the most influential mediators of Bauhaus ideas in America in the postwar years. \n\n\nThis richly illustrated volume showcases Bredendieck’s life and work in lavish detail. Highlighting the breadth of his global network and the wide range of artworks he created\, it is a fitting monument to an important artist\, and ambassador\, of the Bauhaus. \n\nFrom Aurich to Atlanta is a new exhibition at the Georgia Tech Library\, which showcases the life and work of Bauhaus-educated designer Hin Bredendieck. It runs from March 22 through May 31\, with three virtual events planned in March and April. \n\n\nA 1930 graduate of the famed Bauhaus School of Design in Germany\, Bredendieck was a student and colleague of design luminaries such as Walter Gropius\, Paul Klee\, and Laslo Moholy-Nagy.  \n\n\nBredendieck emigrated to the United States in 1937 to escape the political turmoil of pre-war Germany. With his fellow Bauhaus emigres\, he brought the Bauhaus design sense and educational methods to America\, teaching first at the new Institute of Design in Chicago\, and later founding the department of industrial design at Georgia Tech.  \nThis event is hosted by the Georgia Tech Library and the Landesmuseum Oldenburg (Oldenburg State Museum for Art and Cultural History) with sponsorship from the Halle Foundation. Collaborators include Dr. Jennifer Gerndt\, the Consulate General of Germany\, and the Georgia Tech School of Industrial Design. Special thanks to the family and former students of Hin Bredendieck for their contributions to this exhibit.
