SUMMARY:The Rise of China Inc.: How the Chinese Communist Party Transformed China into a Giant Corporation
DESCRIPTION:Book Presentation – The Rise of China Inc.: How the Chinese Communist Party Transformed China into a Giant Corporation\nLeveraging its absolute power\, low human rights advantage\, and tolerance by other countries\, the Chinese Communist Party has transformed China into a giant corporation. Living and working are not rights but privileges granted by the party. State-owned firms are business units or subsidiaries\, private firms are joint ventures\, and foreign firms are franchisees of the party. ‘China\, Inc.\,’ enjoys the agility of a firm and the vast resources of a state. Meanwhile\, foreign firms competing with Chinese firms can find themselves matched against the mighty Chinese state. China\, Inc. will interest many readers: it will compel business scholars to rethink state-firm relationships; assist multinational business practitioners in formulating effective strategies; aid policymakers in countering China’s expansion; and inform the public of the massive corporate organization China has become and how democracies can effectively deal with it. \nShaomin Li is Professor and Eminent Scholar at Old Dominion University. His research has appeared in Journal of International Business Studies\, Harvard Business Review\, The Economist\, The Wall Street Journal\, and The Financial Times. He is author of Bribery and Corruption in Weak Institutional Environments (Cambridge University Press\, 2019). \nCo-Sponsors: \n\nAtlanta Council on International Relations\nChina Research Center\nOld Dominion University Strome College of Business

SUMMARY:Arcadias: A Conversation with Emmanuelle Bayamack-Tam and Lauren Groff
DESCRIPTION:Diving into literary arcadias on the 150th anniversary of the Commune. \nJoin the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and Emory University for Ideas and Ideals: Strong Female Voices\, a monthly online gathering exploring how we redefine power\, consent\, and submission. \nModerated by Katy Waldman. \nEmmanuelle Bayamack-Tam makes her English-language debut with Arcadia\, a mind-blowing manifesto for the abolition of sexual\, geographical and even literary frontiers… At the tender age of six\, Farah moves into a community in harmony with nature. Its spiritual leader preaches equality\, non-violence\, anti-speciesism\, and uninhibited desire for all\, regardless of gender\, age\, looks\, or ability. At fifteen\, Farah learns she is intersex\, and begins to explore her own desires beyond the confines of gender. What\, Farah asks\, is a man or a woman? What does it mean to be part of a community? What is utopia when there are refugees seeking shelter who cannot enter? \nLauren Groff is the author of another Arcadia\, this one set in the fields and forests of western New York State in the late 1960s. Several dozen idealists set out to live off the land\, founding a commune centered on the grounds of a decaying mansion. Arcadia follows a lyrical\, rollicking\, tragic\, and exquisite utopian dream from its hopeful start through its heyday and beyond. \nAs their characters subvert contemporary conceptions of normative sexuality\, capitalist culture\, and environmental destruction\, our speakers ponder whether utopias are doomed by definition. They’ll ask what kind of dreams can be fathomed\, what borders redefined what bounds or relations amended. \nEmmanuelle Bayamack-Tam has published twelve novels and two plays with P.O.L\, including three novels under the pseudonym Rebecca Lighieri. She is a founding member of the interdisciplinary association Autres et Pareils and co-director of Éditions Contre-Pied. Arcadia\, won the Prix du Livre Inter. It was shortlisted for the Prix Femina\, the Prix Médicis\, and Prix de Flore. (Translation by Ruth Diver for Seven Stories Press) \nLauren Groff is the author of The Monsters of Templeton (Hachette)\, Delicate Edible Birds (Hachette)\, and Arcadia (Hyperion Books)\, a New York Times Notable Book\, winner of the Medici Book Club Prize\, and finalist for the L.A. Times Book Award. Her novel\, Fates and Furies (Riverhead Books)\, was a finalist for the National Book Award in Fiction\, the National Book Critics Circle Award\, the Kirkus Award and was a New York Times Notable book and Bestseller. Her Florida (Riverhead Books) was a finalist for the National Book Award. In 2017\, she was named by Granta Magazine as one of the Best of Young American Novelists of her generation. \nKaty Waldman is a staff writer at The New Yorker\, where she writes about books\, literature\, and more. Previously\, she was a staff writer at Slate and the host of the “Slate’s Audio Book Club” podcast. She won the National Book Critics Circle’s Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing in 2019 and the American Society of Magazine Editors Award for journalists younger than thirty in 2018. \nThis series\, organized by the Cultural Services Book Department is made possible through the support of the Institut Français\, Paris.

SUMMARY:Authors Amplified Series: Isabella Alexander-Nathani\, 'Burning at Europe's Borders'
DESCRIPTION:Global Atlanta’s Authors Amplified series highlighting Georgia voices continues with a virtual interview with Dr. Isabella Alexander-Nathani\, anthropologist\, filmmaker and author of the recently released book Burning at Europe’s Borders: An Ethnography on the African Migrant Experience in Morocco\, which features an accompanying documentary The Burning by Small World Films\, Dr. Alexander-Nathani’s production company. \nAbout the Book: \nIn her heart-pounding and courageous debut\, Dr. Isabella Alexander-Nathani uncovers an unseen side of our global migrant and refugee crisis. \nBurning at Europe’s Borders invites readers inside the lives of the world’s largest population of migrants and refugees–the hundreds of thousands who are trapped in hidden forest camps and forgotten detention centers at Europe’s southernmost borders in North Africa. “Hrig\,” the Arabic term for “illegal immigration\,” translates to “burning.” It signifies a migrant’s decision to burn their papers\, in order to avoid identification and repatriation on their long journeys to safer shores. But it also signifies their decision to burn their past lives\, sacrificing themselves in hopes of reaching a future on the other side of the Mediterranean Sea. Alexander-Nathani examines this process of “burning\,” traveling thousands of miles alongside those who have fled war and extreme poverty across the African continent only to find themselves trapped in Libya\, Algeria\, and Morocco. This book exposes the political agreements that have led to Europe’s control over African borders and the illicit practices that continue to mold North African countries into brutal holding cells for our world’s most vulnerable. \nBurning at Europe’s Borders introduces new ways of doing anthropological research in the modern era\, as Alexander-Nathani skillfully weaves images and individual stories into her analysis of changing migration flows at our world’s most critical border crossings. Her creative mixed-methods approach included community filmmaking practices and over three years of ethnographic research in African smuggling rings\, hidden migrant brotherhoods\, and European Union-funded detention centers. This is an ideal cross-over book\, promising to engage students\, scholars\, policymakers\, and popular audiences seeking to step inside the heart of our world’s greatest humanitarian crisis. \nBurning at Europe’s Borders is a volume in the series ISSUES OF GLOBALIZATION: CASE STUDIES IN CONTEMPORARY ANTHROPOLOGY\, which examines the experiences of individual communities in our contemporary world. Each volume offers a brief and engaging exploration of a particular issue arising from globalization and its cultural\, political\, and economic effects on certain peoples or groups. \nAbout the Author: \nDr. Isabella Alexander-Nathani is an award-winning writer\, filmmaker\, educator\, and human rights activist. Trained as a cultural anthropologist\, her work is motivated by her belief that storytelling has the power to humanize complex political issues and bring positive social change. Her latest book\, Burning at Europe’s Borders (Oxford University Press\, 2020) and related documentary film The Burning (Small World Films\, 2020) uncover the human sides of our global migrant and refugee crisis. She currently serves as Founder and CEO of Small World Films\, a non-profit production studio\, which uses grounded research and social impact storytelling to lift the voices of marginalized populations to the global stage and fight for international policy change. \nIsabella’s work has been featured on BBC\, CNN\, NPR\, PRI\, and Al Jazeera\, and she is a regular contributor to SAPIENS\, where she writes a monthly column called “Borders.” Her recent speaking programs have brought her to stages around the world\, including the United Nations General Assembly and the Parliament of the World’s Religions\, where she has delivered keynote addresses on human rights to audiences of more than 10\,000. In 2016\, The American Anthropological Association presented her with the “Emerging Leader in Anthropology” award\, and her latest projects have been supported by grants from The National Science Foundation. She is proud to serve on the Advisory Board for several non-profit organizations\, including The Global Village Project\, the first school designed specifically for refugee girls; Stories Found\, an organization equipping African youth with filmmaking skills and technology; and SAPIENS\, a digital journal focused on connecting social science research to the public. \nOriginally from the southern United States\, Isabella has called New York\, Paris\, Chicago\, Rabat\, Atlanta\, and Bamako home over the years. She earned her degrees from New York University (BA)\, the University of Chicago (MA)\, Emory University (MA\, PhD)\, and the Spéos Institute in France (MFA)\, and she has held a faculty positions in the Departments of Anthropology and Film Studies at Emory University and the Department of Social Sciences at Université Mohammed V\, Morocco’s National University. While her work frequently brings her to New York\, Geneva\, and across North Africa\, she now happily calls Santa Barbara\, California home\, where she lives with her partner\, Amit Alexander-Nathani\, their son\, and their two rescue dogs\, Willow and Bear. \nAbout the Series: \nGeorgia’s deep pool of international expertise is sometimes hidden in the ivory towers of academia or overshadowed by looming national figures. Sought-after thought leaders sometimes shine globally while being ignored in their own backyard. \nWith Authors Amplified\, a monthly series of book talks open to subscribers and the public\, Global Atlanta showcases authoritative local voices in foreign affairs and international business while highlighting the state’s intellectual contributions to important global conversations. \nThe Authors Amplified series is presented by the Atlanta Global Studies Center (AGSC)\, a partnership of Georgia Institute of Technology and Georgia State University\, funded in part by a US Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant\, with a mission to empower the metro region’s global agenda.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Hin Bredendieck: From Aurich to Atlanta
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe Georgia Tech Library welcomes Gloria Köepnick and Rainer Stamm in conversation with Dean Leslie Sharp for a lively discussion of their 2020 book Hin Bredendieck: From Aurich to Atlanta. This event is free and open to all. \n\nAbout the book: Hin Bredendieck (1904–95) graduated from the Bauhaus and was a versatile designer and pioneering teacher of design. A native of Aurich\, in East Friesland in Germany\, he was a student at the Bauhaus in Dessau from 1927 to 1930. During his time as a student there\, Bredendieck worked with Marianne Brandt to design famous lamps such as the “Kandem Bedside Table Lamp\,” which can be found on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. In 1937\, Bredendieck emigrated to the United States\, where he was appointed as a teacher at the New Bauhaus Chicago. From there\, he moved on to become the founding director of the Institute for Industrial Design at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta\, and from this perch he established himself as one of the most influential mediators of Bauhaus ideas in America in the postwar years. \n\n\nThis richly illustrated volume showcases Bredendieck’s life and work in lavish detail. Highlighting the breadth of his global network and the wide range of artworks he created\, it is a fitting monument to an important artist\, and ambassador\, of the Bauhaus. \n\nFrom Aurich to Atlanta is a new exhibition at the Georgia Tech Library\, which showcases the life and work of Bauhaus-educated designer Hin Bredendieck. It runs from March 22 through May 31\, with three virtual events planned in March and April. \n\n\nA 1930 graduate of the famed Bauhaus School of Design in Germany\, Bredendieck was a student and colleague of design luminaries such as Walter Gropius\, Paul Klee\, and Laslo Moholy-Nagy.  \n\n\nBredendieck emigrated to the United States in 1937 to escape the political turmoil of pre-war Germany. With his fellow Bauhaus emigres\, he brought the Bauhaus design sense and educational methods to America\, teaching first at the new Institute of Design in Chicago\, and later founding the department of industrial design at Georgia Tech.  \nThis event is hosted by the Georgia Tech Library and the Landesmuseum Oldenburg (Oldenburg State Museum for Art and Cultural History) with sponsorship from the Halle Foundation. Collaborators include Dr. Jennifer Gerndt\, the Consulate General of Germany\, and the Georgia Tech School of Industrial Design. Special thanks to the family and former students of Hin Bredendieck for their contributions to this exhibit.

DESCRIPTION:Global Atlanta invites you to join our Authors Amplified book talk series\, this time with Jonathan Addleton\, Dust of Kandahar author and former U.S. ambassador to Mongolia \nSpeaker\nJonathan Addleton\nA five-time USAID country director (India\, Pakistan\, Cambodia\, Mongolia and Central Asia)\, Jonathan Addleton also served as US Ambassador to Mongolia and USAID Representative to the European Union. He retired from the Foreign Service in January 2017\, returning to his hometown of Macon\, GA to teach at Mercer University. Ambassador Addleton movingly describes the everyday human drama of the American soldiers\, local tribal dignitaries\, government officials\, and religious leaders he interacted and worked within southern Afghanistan. \nAddleton’s writing is at its most vivid in his firsthand account of the April 2013 suicide bombing outside a Zabul school that killed his translator\, a fellow Foreign Service officer\, and three American soldiers. The memory of this tragedy lingers over Addleton’s journal entries\, his prose offering poignant glimpses into the interior life of a U.S. diplomat stationed in harm’s way. \n  \nGeorgia’s deep pool of international expertise is sometimes hidden in the ivory towers of academia or overshadowed by looming national figures. Kim College of Future Studies was added to especially address the needs of education in the 4th Industrial Revolution. \n  \nDestined to Serve: From the Queen City to Daejeon and the Presidency of a Korean University\nThis is the story of a Cold Warrior who experiences the dangers of total nuclear war from the Underground War Room in SAC Headquarters during the Cuban Missile Crisis and later\, flying targeting missions during the early days of America’s involvement in Vietnam. More importantly\, Endicott’s story and ultimate mission in life is the work he has done to the control and reduction of nuclear weapons and the development of regional peace through the internationalization of higher education in Northeast Asia. And he still believes the best thing he ever did in life was to marry his wife of 60 years\, Mitsuyo\, from Japan. \n  \nGeorgia’s deep pool of international expertise is sometimes hidden in the ivory towers of academia or overshadowed by looming national figures. SUMMARY:New MississippiS: Some Situated Stories on Contemporary Ecologies
DESCRIPTION:Join for a Live Talk “Some Situated Stories on Contemporary Ecologies” featuring Dr. Maurita Poole\, (Director and Chief Curator of Clark Atlanta University Art Museum)\, Clémence Hallé (Researcher and Writer) and Duncan Evennou (Theater Maker and Performer). \nIn these times of planetary troubles\, they believe that works of art and archives can help tell historically situated and pluralized stories about contemporary ecological issues. Using the South of the Mississippi River as an emblem of the markers of environmental problems\, they consider the intersection between exploitation\, ecologies\, and people in two locales in the American South. This project New MississippiS is a digital and artistic reading of multiple museums’ archives and collections. \nIn this multi-sited project\, ecologies is examined in terms of its literal and symbolic meanings. The specific materials utilized include: recordings of an international cultural institution’s project along the River;  readings of Southern writers Margaret Walker and Richard Wright; and selected works from collections at historically black institutions in Georgia and Mississippi. \nThe first public event will consist of a presentation of the overall project\, its origins and its protocols\, as well as the launch of the online platform on which the materials will be read and contextualised by a performer and the organisers. Assembled in a series of podcasts\, these audios and its images will give a taste of the story behind the curatorial process of New Mississippis. \nThis event is organized by the Clark Atlanta University Art Museum\, Jackson State University’s Margaret Walker Center\, Augusta University and the Lighthouse Company with the support of the Atlanta Office of the Cultural Services of the Embassy of France in the United States and FACE Contemporary Theater.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: 'Corazón de Dixie: Mexicanos in the U.S. South Since 1910'
DESCRIPTION:When Latino migration to the U.S. South became increasingly visible in the 1990s\, observers and advocates grasped for ways to analyze “new” racial dramas in the absence of historical reference points. However\, as this book is the first to comprehensively document\, Mexicans and Mexican Americans have a long history of migration to the U.S. South. Corazon de Dixie recounts the untold histories of Mexicanos’ migrations to New Orleans\, Mississippi\, Arkansas\, Georgia\, and North Carolina as far back as 1910. It follows Mexicanos into the heart of Dixie\, where they navigated the Jim Crow system\, cultivated community in the cotton fields\, purposefully appealed for help to the Mexican government\, shaped the southern conservative imagination in the wake of the civil rights movement\, and embraced their own version of suburban living at the turn of the twenty-first century. \nRooted in U.S. and Mexican archival research\, oral history interviews\, and family photographs\, Corazón de Dixie unearths not just the facts of Mexicanos’ long-standing presence in the U.S. South but also their own expectations\, strategies\, and dreams. \nJulie M. Weise is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Oregon. She received her Ph.D. in U.S. and Latin American history in 2009. From 2001-2\, she worked in the administration of Mexico’s President Vicente Fox as a speechwriter and researcher for the cabinet-level Office of the President for Mexicans Living Abroad. She has also worked as a translator\, paralegal\, project manager\, and policy researcher at immigration-related agencies in New Haven and Los Angeles. \nJavier Díaz de León serves as Consul General of Mexico in Atlanta. Diaz is a member of the Mexican Foreign Service since 1991 and holds the rank of Ambassador since April 28th\, 2017. During his diplomatic career he has held various positions: Deputy Consul General in San Diego; Deputy Consul General in New York\, Head of the Office for Migration and Hispanic Affairs at the Embassy of Mexico in the United States\, and Executive Director of the Institute for Mexicans Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico City. In May 2016\, he was appointed as Consul General of Mexico in Atlanta\, Georgia\, serving in this position since June 18th\, 2016. The Consulate General of Mexico in Atlanta oversees the states of Georgia\, Alabama\, and most of Tennessee.

SUMMARY:A Literary Pause with FACC Board Member Stephanie Schechner\, PhD.
DESCRIPTION:The Alliance Française and the FACC will join Stephanie Schechner\, Ph.D.\, Professor of French and Gender\, Women\, and Sexuality Studies\, Widener University\, for a Virtual Talk via Zoom.us. Stephanie will discuss the French novel she translated into English\, Camille in October. \nStephanie will share information about the life of French author Mireille Best\, give readings of passages from the novel in English\, and welcome your questions. \nIn 1950s France\, Camille struggles to figure out who she is and where she fits in the world of her coastal working-class neighborhood. Her mother holds the family together\, with the support of a group of women who talk over coffee and cigarettes each day. Her father\, a war veteran\, is largely silent except when his inner rage erupts in violence. Her sister\, Ariane\, provides comic relief\, while her construction worker brother\, Abel\, is a lost soul who suffers from severe seizures. Camille herself can usually be found curled up with a book\, observing everything. \nBut an intellectual and sexual relationship with her dentist’s wife opens a world of new possibilities to Camille. Where will this lead her? Suicide\, murder\, accidental death–all are possible in this unconventional narrative from French author Mireille Best. As a young adult\, Camille is not always the most reliable narrator\, but she charms with her intelligence\, lack of pretension\, and strong connection to her roots. Through Camille’s eyes\, we embark on a fundamental and universal quest to balance where we come from with who we need to become. \n“Amid misery\, love as a passage to life—emotional and cultural—gives this story its power and its originality. To achieve this required an exacting sensitivity. Here is the true success of this novelist.” — Le Monde
