DESCRIPTION:The Halle Institute for Global Research invites you to attend a lecture by Elif Batuman\, author of critically acclaimed books such as The Idiot and The Possessed which explore her identity as a Turkish-American woman\, intentionality about the precision of language\, and befuddlement in the early age of email. \n\n\n\nIn her first book\, The Possessed\, Elif Batuman wrote about her experiences studying Russian literature as a PhD student in America\, Russia\, and Uzbekistan. She did not initially think of her attraction to Russian literature – which is also manifested by the title of her first novel\, The Idiot – as being related to her Turkish family background\, or to her experiences in Turkey as a child. \nAfter The Possessed came out in 2010\, she moved to Istanbul\, where she worked at Koç University and wrote for the New Yorker magazine. She lived in and visited Istanbul regularly between 2009 and 2015. During that time\, she saw the beginning of the Syrian Civil War\, the opening of the Museum of Innocence\, the full run of The Magnificent Century\, the Gezi protests\, HDP parliamentary success in 2015\, and the Suruç bombing. Witnessing such a politically vital and complicated period of history\, experiencing the tensions of national identity more closely\, and coming to understand\, as an adult\, the country that shaped her parents\, prompted Elif to rethink her attraction to Russian novels and her understanding of Turkish history. Through the lens of current events\, she came to discover that works of Dostoevsky are more closely related to the ideology of Atatürk than she originally realized. \nThis event includes a seated luncheon. The title poem shows us the place of an Indian American teenager in the bland surround of a mostly white peer group\, partaking of imagery from the poet’s Hindu tradition; the very next poem is a fanciful autobiography\, relying for its imagery on the religious tradition of Islam. \nProfessor Deepika Bahri of Emory’s Department of English leads readers through a selection of poems from this volume\, which “juxtaposes the serious and the grave\, the base and the transcendent\, and those acts of gentleness and brutality that define us.” \nFee: $25 for Carlos Museum members; $40 for nonmembers\, and includes the cost of the book. This expensive and risky strategy has aggravated conflict with the United States\, and given China an enormous opportunity to fail. However\, if it succeeds\, China will emerge as a new kind of power\, showing off its new model as an alternative to American capitalism. \nBIO: Barry Naughton is the So Kwanlok Professor at the School of Global Policy and Strategy\, University of California\, San Diego. Naughton’s work on the Chinese economy focuses on market transition; industry and technology; foreign trade; and political economy. DESCRIPTION:CANDIDE\, based on Voltaire’s meandering\, farcical epic of the same name\, celebrates the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein\, its composer\, this year. The novel is considered by most to be a spoof of certain religious doctrines that espoused blind optimism despite never-ending catastrophes. GSU Opera Theater’s production is based on the 1989 version that Bernstein conducted at the Tanglewood Festival. CANDIDE had too many lyricists to list\, but it was the original brainchild of top-shelf American dramatist Lillian Hellman. The story\, an allegory about the wanderings of an optimistic young lad faced with overwhelming loss\, is clearly extreme. Keep your eyes and your ears open; CANDIDE is a wild ride! Oh\, and happy birthday Bernstein!

On November 17\, 2018 Liliana will be reading from her first novel “Das dunkle Herz der Welt\,” which won the GOLDENER HOMER 2016 in the category of historical biography/events.\n\nViolist Katerina Lewis will perform “Dans ţănănesc” [Rustic Dance] by Constantin Dimitrescu\, “Waves of the Danube” by Ion Ivanovici and a Romanian Dance by Béla Bartók.\n\nTo help prepare the audience for an evening with Liliana\, they are offering her novel for sale in advance.
