SUMMARY:Exploring Cultures through the Lens of Film
DESCRIPTION:Films captivate us as viewers\, transporting us to different situations and places. We submerge in their stories and we get emotional. Films can help us to understand and empathize with the protagonist of the story. Sometimes we identify and relate to the plot and we become advocates\, and sometimes we feel aggravated and want to leave the theater or we become hard critics. Films are an incredible source of intercultural interactions and learning. \nBecome part of Intercultural Atlanta’s event on “Exploring Cultures through the Lens of Film”! Our dynamic panelists will be speaking on their areas of expertise. Participants will have an opportunity to address various questions on film watching and cultures in addition to how to add films to their training routines. \nJOIN US at this unique event! \nOur panelists: \n– Nsenga K. Burton\, Ph.D – Professor at Emory Department of Film and Media Studies. Also founder & editor-in-chief of the award-winning news site the Burton Wire. \n– Shellie Schmals – Atlanta Jewish Film Festival Film Programming Manager \n– Christopher Minz – Georgia State University Ph.D. Candidate\, Moving Image Studies \nIntercultural Atlanta invites you to bring interested colleagues\, family\, and friends! Share with your social media and on public billboards. This special event is open to the public at no cost. Be sure to RSVP. \nParking: \nThere is a parking garage below the Colony Square building. Park in the RED section and take the escalators up to the main floor to catch the elevator to the 11th floor. Bring your parking ticket with you to validate at the cultural center. If you are taking MARTA\, the arrival train station is ARTS Station. Walk towards Peachtree Street and Colony Square is across the street\, slightly south. \nPhoto by: \nAgence Olloweb on Unsplash \nShare it: \nFeel free to share this event on your Facebook and Twitter. \nPopcorn and light refreshments will be served\, \nWe hope you can attend! \nInterCultural Atlanta

SUMMARY:DARKTOWN: Catching a Killer in 1948 Atlanta
DESCRIPTION:DARKTOWN: Catching a Killer in 1948 Atlanta\, “the latest & best in crime fiction”- The New York Times \nThe New York Times’ review of DARKTOWN says it all: “stand back and watch a white cop open an investigation in a black neighborhood in Atlanta\, circa 1948.”  You do not want to miss this fascinating discussion about how the ripples of Atlanta’s segregationist history shape the rising social movements of our time. \nIn 1948\, eight men became the first African American officers in the Atlanta police department.  Despite their badges\, they could not arrest white suspects\, drive squad cars\, or enter the police headquarters.  This is the backdrop for Darktown: A Novel in which two white police officers refuse to investigate the murder of a black woman. \nAward winning author Thomas Mullen\, who lives near downtown Atlanta\, and the Dean of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at Georgia Institute of Technology and Council Board Member\, Dr. Jacqueline Royster\, will discuss the novel’s connections to Atlanta’s history linking the conflicts in the book – police violence\, racism\, segregation\, and the role of women – with current economic segregation\, and the #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo movements. \nDarktown – Catching a Killer in 1948 Atlanta

SUMMARY:A Note on Opera: Mozart's 'Don Giovanni'
DESCRIPTION:“A Note on Opera” resumes with what’s often acclaimed as the greatest opera ever written\, “Don Giovanni.” Mozart and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte transform a stock character from Spanish morality plays into a flawed\, contemptible\, yet tragic figure. There are so many different ways to interpret the Don that no truly definitive portrayal will ever be realized. Mozart and da Ponte described “Don Giovanni” not as a “dramma per musica\,” as would have been the norm\, but rather with the more cryptic “dramma giocoso\,” or “playful drama.” “Don Giovanni” isn’t strictly serious\, but neither is it to be taken too lightly.

SUMMARY:Reeling Out Georgia Film to the World
DESCRIPTION:No wonder why you might run into celebrities when taking a stroll on the Beltline: Atlanta has become the “Hollywood of the South”. From 2008 to 2017\, the industry has grown from $67.7 million to $2.7 billion in Georgia\, creating thousands of jobs and hosting productions like “The Walking Dead”\, “Stranger Things”\, and Marvel’s hit “The Avenger: Infinity War”. Georgia indeed hosts some great venues for these productions\, yet tax incentives were key for the film industry to boom in the ATL. \nA panel of Atlanta’s most creative minds will explore how Georgia can remain internationally competitive\, and describe their vision for the future of Atlanta’s film and TV production industries. \nFeaturing: \n\nSheoyki Alexis Jones\, Program Manager\, Creative Industries at Invest Atlanta\nDrew Sawyer\, Partner & Post-Producer\, Moonshine Post Production Company\nSusanna Spiccia\, Executive Director\, re:Imagine ATL\nDiamonde Williamson\, CEO\, Blossom

SUMMARY:Compagnie Hervé KOUBI
DESCRIPTION:Internationally renowned dance company\, Compagnie Hervé KOUBI\, debuts their critically acclaimed work “What the Day Owes to the Night” (Ce que le jour doit à la nuit) at the Rialto.   Recognized as one of Europe’s most distinctive choreographers\, Hervé KOUBI believed he was of French heritage until he was 25\, when his father suddenly revealed his Algerian roots. “What the Day Owes to the Night” is the result of his ensuing journey to his parents’ homeland\, where he recruited artists who had never been to dance school\, but performed hip-hop and capoeira\, backflips and head spins\, on Algeria’s streets and beaches.  In a beautifully fluid piece of inspired choreography that combines urban and contemporary dance movement\, capoeira\, and martial arts with powerful imagery\, KOUBI’s French-Algerian West-African all-male dance troupe presents a jaw-dropping performance packed with emotional intensity.

SUMMARY:Great Decisions 2018 -- Media and Foreign Policy
DESCRIPTION:State and non-state actors today must maneuver a complex and rapidly evolving media landscape. Conventional journalism now competes with user-generated content. Official channels of communication can be circumvented through social media. Foreign policy is tweeted from the White House and “fake news” has entered the zeitgeist. Cyberwarfare\, hacking and misinformation pose complex security threats. How are actors using media to pursue and defend their interests in the international arena? What are the implications for U.S. policy? \n\nSpeaker: Michael Jablonski\, Georgia State University
