DESCRIPTION:January 18 – April 21\, 2018\nOglethorpe University Museum of Art \nThe exhibition Stories Without an End: Power\, Beauty and Wisdom of Women in African Art of the Mehta Collection includes a selection of 50 classically carved wooden sculptures and masks drawn from the collection of Dileep and Martha Mehta. Peterson\, OUMA director\, and organized by Amanda Hellman\, PhD\, curator of African art\, Michael C. Carlos Museum\, Emory University.

SUMMARY:Atlanta Ballet: Return to Fall
DESCRIPTION:Return to a Strange Land \nAtlanta Ballet returns with a fall lineup that includes one of dance visionary Jiří Kylián’s signature celebrations of dancers’ physical limits\, Return to a Strange Land. Sinewy forms entwine in intimate embraces before spiraling across the stage in graceful lifts. They are physical bodies in space detached from place and time – travelers in a strange land. They move as counterpoints\, exploring the limits of centrifugal force and\, seemingly\, gravity. \nThis selection of works will include the Grand Pas de Deux from Don Quixote as well as Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux staged by Balanchine* protégé and beloved Atlanta Ballet Artistic Director Emeritus\, Robert Barnett. \nAs part of a new transatlantic partnership with Czech National Ballet\, Atlanta Ballet will present a special guest performance this September. Witness the powerful emotional metamorphosis of the artists through sensual\, off-kilter partnering in this in this highly stylized work by Mauro Bigonzetti.

SUMMARY:2018 Middelthon-Candler Gala
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural Middelthon-Candler Gala was held when the Millennium Gate Museum (The Gate) opened in 2008. Matthew Middelthon\, a descendant of Coca-Cola founder Asa G. Candler\, established the Middelthon-Candler Peace\, Justice\, and Millennium Gate Prizes to continue the family’s stewardship of the state of Georgia. All proceeds from the gala are used to further the mission of The Gate and The National Monuments Foundation. \nThe National Monuments Foundation is based in Georgia\, one of 13 original British colonies. Denmark was among the first to establish diplomatic relations with Georgia\, as well as a Consul General in Savannah in 1801. It is our desire to raise the standard of this international prize and partner with Denmark\, Danish industry\, and Danish society at large\, Scandinavia being a region noted for recognizing great human accomplishment. Mr. Middelthon requested that as his Candler family name is better known globally as the founders of Coca-Cola\, we now adapt the prize name to Candler Peace\, Justice\, and Millennium Gate Prizes. \n\n\n\n\nMillennium Gate Prize Categories: \nPeace Prize: Honors leadership in the promotion of fraternity between peoples and nations. \nJustice Prize: Honors leadership in effecting positive social change. \nMillennium Gate Prize: Honors excellence in the arts\, sciences\, or business. \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Island of My Love -- 'Cuba Amor' Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join the Department of Museums\, Archives & Rare Books\, in partnership with the KSU School of Art and Design\, the Division of Global Affairs\, and Western Kentucky University\, for the opening reception of The Island of My Love\, or Cuba Amor. \nThis exhibit aims to illustrate the stories\, images\, and transcultural synergy between the peoples of the United States and Cuba. The exhibit has three components that reflect the connections between place\, identity\, and artistic expression: \n\nWork by Cuban artists express “transculturation\,” a term coined by anthropologist Fernando Ortiz Fernándiz that reflects how identity crosses cultural lines.\nWorks by children enrolled in an afterschool enrichment program\, La Clase Mágica\, investigate how art serves as a catalyst for personal and social transformation.\nThe String Project\, created by photographers Chelsea and Mariano Cortez\, invites visitors to take photographs clutching the same white rope in different surroundings.\n\nLike a drop of water that flows into a river\, creative community collaborations between artists\, educators\, and students can help us imagine a better world. The exhibition will be on view at Kennesaw State University during the fall 2019 semester as part of our “Year of Cuba” program. We invite you to explore Cuba Amor\, and meet the people of Cuba face to face.
